I am 15 days away from ordering a Zed from Japan. I have found two examples:

1)Blue

Manual

non-turbo

70k miles

exterior is mint

interior is good -ish

T-bar

2)Red

Automatic

non-turbo

70k miles

exterior is good apart from the n/s/f wing where the colour is faded

interior in MINT

70k miles

T-bar

The cars have exactly the same price. I wanted to go for the auto(my left knee gets knackered easily), until i read about automatic gearbox failures, and i'm having second thoughts.

The automatic will be easier to live with and i will have one less worry on servicing(clutch), the manual will be more robust.

Is the auto gearbox failures so frequent that i should really go for the manual?

Best Regards, Makis

I think the big decision here is not man/auto but turbo/non-turbo.

Personal preference, but if you want a car that's cheaper to run and possibly more reliable then go for the NA. If you want a car for the power and lots of tuning potential then go for the turbo.

My preference would be for the turbo, but them I'm a speed freak !

well if your not going for a turbo (i would they are to cool:D) Then i doubt youd have to much trouble with the Auto box, so if its easier to live with then go for that (as performance does not seem to be part of what your buying for) Man is probably far more fun and involving (but then thats why i got a MAN )

down to personal choice, but a nice Blue one is a great colour, not to many around.

TBH, the TT will cost me less to insure(by £100) but in the long term, it's the running costs i'm afraid of. I also am a speed freak(as most of us are :D).

If everything goes OK with the N/A then i will most probably buy a TT after 6 months or a year. I just want to see how it goes.

All my previous cars were great for DIY(you can't beat K-Jetronic on DIY:D), and the Zed is pretty much an unknown quantity to me(despite Ajay's compehensive help, thanks Ajay:)).

You're a speed freak, you will think of buying a TT in about 6 months......therefore buy a TT now. Don't wait for the further depreciation on 6-12 months of NA ownership, just buy the 'full-fat' version in the first place!

Auto's unreliable?.....well I've owned 2 auto ZX's now as my only transport, thrashed both of them on the open road, and spent many hours in crawling/stationary rush hour traffic, and have had NO PROBLEMS AT ALL! Yes, if you do a search you will find quite a few owners who have had problems, but then again, how many of us have not?.....LOTS!

It's a mechanical component, it could last forever, then again it could fail this afternoon. Then again, you could be stood at a bus stop thinking about this and the bloody bus hits you (if you live in Crawley) Shit happens.

You WANT a TT, so buy one. Auto/manual doesn't really matter, go for a test drive and decide. Just make sure you walk away if there is ANY doubt about mechanical condition of the example you are looking at.

Well said x-biker :)

Auto it will deinately be then.

Off to the decision room for the turbo/non-turbo part....:D

Agree 100%;) Ok my autobox is not standard, but it has done over 30k miles of PAIN!

When the auto box fails it is 90% the same problem, the clutch packs.

Go for the TT ATT;)

I would go for the manual because I love the blue on the Z.

can someone tell em how can i post a pic, so that i can show you both of them?

At the bottom of page where you post there is a part that says Attach File and a browse button. Click browse and select the file. You can only do 1 per post.

Stuart

sod that, buy the shed with neon strips next to the red zed. :D

back to the question tho, it has to be TT, ive had mine 6 months or so and im already in need of speed increase, with a TT theres much more mods available than a N/A, and its sooooo much fun to drive, u can happily plod around or give it some whooosh, the auto is good box with overdrive and power mode :D , the manual? well ive never driven one but me personally think it would be hard going if u do a lot of town driving like my self.

but the choice is yours, and i would go for the blue auto if i had to choose from the two pictured.

the blue looks nicer form the outside, but the interior on the red one looks much better. But tbh i would skip the n/a and go for a twin turbo because boost = :D :D :D :D
