Sorry to see you got probs so soon, but I think this is pretty typical when you first get it. Took me about 4 weeks to get autotrans sorted on mine.

I am sure all be well soon and you can get EXCITED all over again!!!

Well the good news is....

It was a split hose :D

All sorted now, and oil change done, fluid levels, head gaskett check and general health check done.

The list of things broken and needing replacing stands at:

Radio (broke during first night)

Electric Ariel doesn't go up or down properly

Windscreen washers not working

Damage to sill where some F**kwit jacked up the car!!!!

Rear brake pads have about 100miles of life left (I'll get some Mintex to replace)

All in all not bad for a 9 year old car considering what I paid :D

Total cost of replacing hose and service...

£133.26

Well happy :D

looks nice Eric, in white too! the best colour (apart from pearl white of course ;)).

Yeah, I never thought I'd like white, but the ZX looks great in white IMHO :D

Well done Eric, Congratulations. Sorry youv'e got some problems to begin with - it all get sorted.

Where did you buy it from in the end?

Enjoy,

Geoff.

Join the nut house,

Glad to read it was only a hose going down, car awarenes & maintenance is CRUICAL! on Z. There are loads of good people here to help when 10 year old gremlins crop up.

....White, at least the 'Duff & Cos' can talk T cut & polish with ya!!

Enjoy it, look after it, then get up early on a summer sunday morning & really enjoy a Z.

harve

Nice Z mate, just bought a UK red manual T.T . myself.

I.C.E. problem sounds like duff earth on coax.

Cheers

Hate to be an anorak, but aren't the front wheels on the wrong way round?

Cheers Geoff,

I got it from a private trader who needed the cash as work had dried up a bit.

This was his private car, though he didn't hardly use it.

Got a pretty good deal :)

Just checked out me 99spec sale catalogue, just to be sure, the wheels are on the right way:D

Good :D

Picked the car up this lunchtime and nearly took it back during the first mile.

The idle was all over the shop, dropping down to around 500rpm.

Then it stalled at lights, it was a nightmare.

Thought I'll give it a chance to sort it self out and put my foot down for a couple of seconds on the motorway.

My Zed coughed out a huge clot of grey smoke then ran loads better

Idle is still slightly rough like it was when I bought it, but it doesn't try and stall and doesn't smell of anything nasty :)

So I'm a happier bunny now than yesterday.

The only thing that worries me slightly still is the oil pressure seems a bit low during idle.

It picks up quickly during accelleration but on idle it tends to be just above the 0 mark.

Does this sound really low pressure for idle?

rough idle is a common one, a good starting point is to clean EVERY connector you can see with electrical contact cleaner, especially the water temp sensor (the bigger connector). Once this is done, fetch off the 2 vacuum pipes to the throttle bodies, and give em a good clean out, jam the throttle wide open and spray carb cleaner in till the bottle runs out (not quite that much but you get the idea ;)), scrub em till they are clean with a toothbrush. Once this is done, at the back of the intake plenum on the passenger side there is the idle air valve, its difficult to see if you dont know what to look for, but theres a hose with a 90 degree bend going round to it, remove that pipe and spray loads more carb cleaner in there, this is cos the throttle body cleanout lets loads of gunk to flow down into the valve and this can result in a much worse idle problem than you had before.

Oh, I almost forgot, disconnect the battery before you do this. When your done put it back together and start it up, it will run as rough as a dog for the first few minutes but it should clear out pretty quick, if the idle falls back down to 500rpm, then on the idle valve there is a screw on the side, give it a couple of turns (whichever way makes it speed up) till its idling about 600-650rpm bottom. Dotn do this with the engine on because the ECU will compensate for you turning the valve, people say you should disconnect the connector on the valve and do it with the engine running but I couldnt be arsed with that so I just turned the engine off, turned it and turned it back on, worked for me. Once you have done all this all *should* be fine. Take it for a drive and when you done it should have sorted itself out enough and the idle should be about 700-750rpm at full temperature, 1000rpm with the a/c on.

edit - this isnt very detailed, for more detailed info head over to AndyP's site at http://www.300zx.org.uk .

As for the oil pressure, is the pressure high when you start from cold, it will change depending on the viscosity of the oil, ours on 10/40 semi synth goes to about half way on the gauge, when warm it is significantly lower when warm, but as soon as you get some revs on it picks up nicely. You have to remember though, that the gauges on these cars suck really hard, I wouldnt trust them for anything. I think its pretty much normal for that to happen anyway, so long as the oil level is ok I wouldnt worry about it.

Thanks for all the advice.

I wasn't too worried about the oil pressure because the car seems to be fine and I have heard the standard gauges aren't accurate, the idling isn't a huge biggy as long as it doesn't stall.

But I'll have a look at the car today.

Red Zed's the bizness with stick, natch.

I paid £5000 for a garage to house her but cannot bear to hide the beauty away.
