vin number

Just been looking at documents for me car and noticed the immobiliser paper work has had the model number of the car put down instead of the chassis numbr. What is the difference between the 2, any ideas, both look similar on a jap car.:confused:

    Jap cars don't have a 'VIN' as such, people tend to use the chassis number. eg GCZ32-5nnnnn

    The model number eg KRGZ32JASHE7 is not unique (as far as I know) and only really describes the spec of the car.
