F**K F**K!!!!!!!

Driving to Leicester up the M1 and I start to smell something funny, oil, drfinately oil coming through the heater vents.

I get to Melton Mowbray (my mums) and I can still smell the car and there is smoke coming from underneath??????

I stop and my mums other half comes out and ask me why the bonnetts up, I tell him I can smell oil and he then tells me to turn the engine off very quickly as there is oil pissing out the back of the engine onto the exhaust??????  :(

I am guessing gearbox oil as it smells different to engine oil and even though Iseem to have lost quite a lot of oil, the engine oil level tells me its still bang on, so it must be gearbox oil.

Now, I have read quite a few posts on here where guys have had gearbox problems, is this one? Oil out of the back side of the engine??

I am guessing so, and if it pours out then is there anyway I can check ?????

AA man is coming in 20mins to have a look, but you know as well as me that he wont have a scooby about it?????

Help guys, for the love of god, HELLLPPPPPPPPPP!!!!!

PS. How much is a rebuild???? Will it need this?

I am running about 370bhp, is this no good for the standard auto box???? Whats this oil cooler gearbox thingy????

HELP!!

Update:

AA Man has been and says its the torque convertor, whatever the hell that is? Can anyone shed some light???

torque convertor

Thats part of your auto box I'm afraid.

The standard autos should be able to handle 370Bhp but only when new or re-conditioned, as these autoboxes tend to die after 10 years+ useage unless overhauled.

Many people get the box upgraded with stronger internals and fit an external oil cooler as the standard one is based in the radiator and not up to much when you up the Bhp

A few members on here have had the autoboxes reconditioned so you should be able to get some ideas on where to go and what to pay. [edit: approx £1200-£1400 for a rebuild with stronger internals i think]

Or you could convert to manual as a few members have.

Hope this helps,

Trev

the torque convertor is not strictly part of the box itself, it slides onto the input shaft of the box (gearbox out to fit).

unless the casings damaged on the TC its more than likely the front gearbox seal thats leaking IMO.

If it is the pipes to the oil cooler, and youve lost alot of oil from it but not yet lost drive, my advice is to get it looked at by a garage but dont drive it, get it on the back of a trailer, I had a pipe split on my autobox oil cooler but cos i saw the smoke i stopped and switched off.

It cost me £60 for recovery and £65 to get the pipes sorted, £125 is a hell of a lot better than a grand for a new box.

I can sell you a good torque converter for £50 if you need one. I'll guarentee it too for 6 months.

Thanks

Thanks for your advice guys, AA Man took me too Jeff TT's where the car is now.

Jeff suggested that it could be the oil lines or it could be something more serious.

He is going to have a look Monday and let me know?

It seems that this car is going to spend more time in the garage then it is on the road?? Is this normal for a Zed?

It still has the cold stalling problem too........:( :( :(

I even told myself that if this goes on for another couple of months then I am gonna have to reconsider another car???

I can afford it money wise, but I cannot afford the inconvenience........I do need some sort of reliability........

I'll keep you updated with whats happening.......

Hang on in there mate,if i remember rightly, met you at Jeffs(aerial trouble?)think you said you not had it long, prob seems a bit unreliable, but just normal wear n tear on things that eventually need doing,Jeff will get you back on the road, while its there get him to do complete check on everything possible that may need sorting in near future, while its with him you might as well do anything else that needs attention ,sooner or later, then hopefully no more hassle, hope it all goes ok,;)

ps,make sure you take a coat and some form of hat to Jeffs, you know it makes sense!LOL,:D

Hi, Newbie. Where in Melton were you? That's where I live! Do you think you will be at Jeff's next weekend as I'll hopefully be there to pick by black beast up. Did you see it there?

Dark Warrior, My mum lives up on Baldocks Lane and thats where I noticed the oil pouring out!! I think jeff had a couple of black 300's in, does yours smoke like a chimney???

I hope mines ready for the weekend but I guess you never know?!?:D

Where abouts in melton r u from?

:( :( :( :( :( :(

Well, the bloke from the garage that Jeff TT sent the car to has just given me the breakdown of the costs as he has apparently found small fragments of metal in the sump of the gearbox?? This has always been fine so I dont understand this???

Gearset: 495

Clutch kit: 325

Torque Convertor: 165

Lab to overhaul G/box: 140

Refit: 240

Oil: 30

Total around £1700 with the VAT.....

I really cannot afford this so I need to find somewhere cheaper??

There must be an alternative???? There must?????????:(

Do a forum search under "gearbox". Markstevens has posted a thread about a freind who can do the work for £1000. I suggest you read all of the posts though. Based in aylsebury? Which I think is near Milton keynes!

Regards

Right then guys heres the latest.

Nearly been without the car for 2 weeks now and starting to miss it like I never have any other car, it must be love???????(wish I was joking!!)

Anyhows, VMTP in Birmingham have it and they called me today to advise that the Oil pump inside the gearbox has busted and basically thats the bits of metal found in the sump. Also, the torque convertor is shagged for soem reason or another, so all in all I need:

New torque Convertor

New Gearbox Oil Pump

New oil

Total is going to be about £400+ all in which I am pleased with as its better than shelling out £1200++++

The car should be finished tomorrow when it will be returned to Zedworld to try and get this cold start problem sorted once and for all as its does my head in!!!! I mean you sit there in your car in front of loads of people looking at you and it keeps stalling, how embarrasing is that!!!! Everybody probably thinks 'SHED!'

Anyway, cant WAIT to get it back. Miss the power, my 2nd car (pug 1.9gti) isnt up to it really!!! Good fun on bends though.....;)

Careful mate you're starting to sound like me... when I first got my zed the gearbox oil cooler failed and took out a lot of the gearbox components with it.. mine cost more at £1300, but was a good job!

Also my 2nd car is a 306Gti-6 (which you've seen!) and that's not as quick.. but again great fun on the bends...

if your history with zed's carries on parallel to mine, for christ sakes don't let Nissan do the timing belt change!!! give it to Jeff!!!

:)

Too right Lee, well since I have had the car things havent gone right!!!

Check out my other post now!!!! Bloody nightmare on Swallow Road, thats what it is!!!!

just replied to that one!

On another note have you convinced the Mrs to swap the 3series?! :)

  • Author

Yeah, soon as we move house, 3-series os going and RX-7 rotary fun is coming along....whey hey!!! Just hope she has less problems than me!!!!;)

blimey... remember talking about the RX-7 with you both on the way to get the zeds.

You'll have to keep me posted on what she thinks! How much will she sell the beamer for? Might know somebody who wants to buy... it's an M3 isn't it?

  • Author

One down from the M3, 328is....176bhp.

I think she paid 12500 for it, so she'll probably sell for 11ish I guess!

Only had it 6 months, but she loves the power of the zed!:D

My other half's got a Suzuki Cappucino... and she's going to drive the Zed for the first time at the weekend!!

God help me......

  • Author

Yeah my missus WAS going to drive the ZED at the weekend too but now its going back to the garage to get this water leak sorted and this detonation sensor looked at!!!!

Nightmare lee, total total nightmare.......:(
