Hello all

What is the range of engine revs to be expected when starting the car from cold. Mine goes to about 2000 rpm when it starts which to me is far too high. It does creap back down to about 1500 rpm after maybee 30 secs but initially i think too high.

Any help appreciated

Yeah any info on that would be great, mine has just started to do that too, it stays a bit too high also unless you let it idle for a while even when warm then it creeps down ?????????????

Mine does that when its cold, its a pain.

But as long as it comes back down again, its just the ECU putting the choke on and then it takes time to realise that you have stopped and it doesnt and lower the revs.

Whats your revs like when warm? Is it between 700 and 900 rpm and smooth? If so, think yourself lucky. ;)

The engine does run reasonably smoooooth at as u say between 700-900 rpm. Its just when its cold started i feel that it runs too quick on start up like in a bad start situation with the engine revving too high to quick b4 oil pressure is high enough.

I havent looked at the manual yet to see the sensors involved to check the terminals etc as it may be that as i have noticed some of the sensor wiring to be corroded so it might be something along these roads.

Cheers Again John Crisp

Hi -

Mine does the same thing but I personally don't think it's anything to worry about. It's just the ECU keeping the cold engine from dying for a few seconds. If it gets down to

Just my view - I'm not a mechanic!

Russ.

Yeah, same here.....if you stand near the car you should hear the revs dropping in bands as the choke cuts out bit by bit.

I always get stressed when the oil is cold, engine wear etc so when I drive the Zed I pull it out of the garage and leave the turbo timer switched on its 3 minute setting. Not enough to start laying carbon everywhere but maybe enough to thin the oil out a bit before starting off.....just another of my little Zed neuroses

Well i am paranoid about engine wear too but i still think that on initial start up even although it is not freezing as my car has been in my work with heaters on etc the revs still seen to go up to 2000 or there abouts when the car is started.

Me thinks i am gonna let that one develope as with the replies i think its maybee just the way the cold start is even although i think its a bit high.

Cheers for the replies everyone John

The quickest way to get your engine up to temp is by driving the car. The aim is to get the engine up to operating temperature asap and this is achieved by setting off as soon as possible once you've started the engine. Just keep the revs down. Its not exactly difficult....

Andy its not when driving the car the revs are erratic or anything that side of its fine.....its when my car is started even in milder situations the revs go straight up to just under 2000 rpm.

Hi John300zx... I hope this might help...

Most ECUs has a temperature sensor .. which is connected to the throttle body.. when throttle body is cold, automatically, the revs will go up.. what I had done here in Singapore for some Civics is to remove the hose linking to the throttle body so as not to use the temp sensor.

But by removing that might not be all good.. as you'll be driving off a not fully warmed up engine.. which sometimes might cause your car to jerk at low gear or low speed...

I had always suggested to all friends to let engine warm up before driving off... usually the time of burning off a cigarette but weather's here is warm... when I was in Quebec... during winter.. usual warm up time is about 20mins... but if you are rushing off for appointment.. I suggest that you go on a low gear... (i'd rather make another cuppa coffee n speed to my destination) :)

The state of the 'choke' depends how long the car has been off for, not temperature outside. The choke itself is only a time delayed valve which slowly opens as time increases. The time is started from the moment you turn the key on. I hope this makes sense..
