After the recent thread about how much our cars are worth I thought I'd have a gander on the Trader.

Going for pocket change now!

Great if you're looking to buy one I suppose. But a bummer if you're trying to sell.

Oh well, such is life. :(

I know I stopped looking ages ago cos it depressed me.

I bought mine for 4.5k and it needed work still does. But there are what I can see good ones going for 4k now. Just means you get bloody ****** boy racers starting to buy them

I wish the "good 'uns" were alot more than the pile of sh1tes.

We need all the knackered Z's to fall to bits and disappear. I feel quite strongly about this, you can get them cheap but then have to spend £1-2k getting them to run sweet and replace/fix all problems. "Proper"ones should fetch proper money, but I suppose a right dog can be disguised quite well so is a difficult thing to rectify. I just know how much I've spent on mine getting it to run/look/go right, and would be gutted to only get "wrecker" money for it, cos there seem to be alot around.

With a few exceptions all cars loose money from new.

You dont buy any Jap car with the view to it increasing in value.

Just look at any past Nissan/Datsun - all worth not alot.

You can still buy a 240Z for about £5K

Dont buy any Jap car if you want to hold on to your money.

Buy a Porsche 911 or Ferrari 355 - keep it for a year or two

and you will probably get most of your money back.

I would slightly disagree with a few points.

I agree that there are many 300zx going for silly money and that is a very bad thing, but some of the 300zx on here are not anywhere near this in terms of quality. The good ones will not ever pay their owners back 100% but they certainly wont be in the sub 4K range. My personal opinion is that the knackers will all die off and the price will increase with rarity. This could never happen with something like the MKIII Supra for instance as there were so many about, and these cars were fairly hardy and lasted long enough to go sub 1K and into the domain of the 'tw*t with no insurance' driver.

The 300zx by virtue of its complexity and rarity wont go that way, the bad ones will change hands until they die and the good ones that are owned and run by people like you lot will bottom out in value and hopefully go up again as a classic.

Most Japanese cars are not classic, but the ones that are Im sure can pay their owners back eventually something worthwhile - look at the NSX, cant be bought for less that a third of its original price - not bad - maybe good 300zx's will be worth 10K in the future as a rare classic.

This is happening with the Nissan Skyline GT-R, as the R34 became available at auction in JDM, the 33 and 32 prices dropped considerably. But now the GT-R legend has effectively been killed off, good GT-R of all marques are rising in value.

Well I hope that is the case anyway:)

Sub 4K? - youre talking a loss in value of approx 80-85%!

In 12 years I would say thats a big drop and they will drop more!

Longterm what other Nissans have increased in value.

I think you will be very lucky to see prices going up.

They will bottom out at spares only prices probably 1.5-2K

Complexity and rarity if anything will make things worse

they will be thought of as too expensive when they go wrong

dont forget most people dont use sites like this.

As far as calling something a classic is concerned - it doesn`t

mean it will go up in value much - it just means a set of people or

a magazine has decided to call it a classic.

Re the NSX - I think they were about 55-60K in early 90`s

getting on for twice the price of the 300ZX! so obviously they

have further to fall. But you can buy them for less than a third of their original price - I have seen at least three advertised at about 18K and they have got plenty to drop yet!

It will also be the same with the skylines - why wouldn`t they

drop like all others have?

You have to be realistic and buy/drive a particular car because you like it and hope it doesn`t cost you too much in the process

If you want to hold onto or make money try housing - its safer.

Mark

Yup ! you're right Mark, I was trying to make y'arl feel better ;)

Oh and Skyline GTR's are rising in value, albeit slightly :)

Just to add my thoughts,

If I remember rightly from a book on 300ZX history there were a total of approx 1500 UK Spec 300ZX's sold when they were withdrawn from the UK Nissan line up (sold between 1990-1995).

How many of the UK Specs are left? The DVLA doesnt seem to have a clue as many imports were registered as a '300ZX' and not a 'Fairlady Z' (plus it seems quite a few import Z32's have been registered as 1989-1990 Z31's).

I belive the best year for Z sales in Japan was 1990 (42,563 produced), most imports in the UK are from around 1990-1992, most of us import owners have seen the 1990 imports in Autotrader and similar going for peanuts (£2,500-£3000). But many of those are the examples that require £2000 to bring up to spec (that'll be a new auto gearbox sir!) .

As mentioned already, as the poorer condition examples fall aside the remaining good examples should command a good price, the rarer UK models should command more.

But for all this worry about price and resale value, dont forget how great these cars are to drive! Get behind the wheel and realize why Autocar labeled the Z32 300ZX "Japans first supercar" back in 1990!! :D
