Saw it for first time the other day - Great film IMHO. I thought the bit at the end as Martin Sheen was getting airlifted out was really good - what he said was really poignant and deep - that they had been fighting themselves and that the enemy was within etc. How you react/treat others is usually a reflection on how you feel about yourself. It was a bit like Eastern (ancient Chinese) philosophy.

Thanks for that. :)

I prefer Alan Partridge's philosophy from the east (Norwich).

I am, therefore I barbecue.

It is a really good film, but wars are always won by the side with the shortest haircut,

"Think about it, why did the US Cavalry beat the Indian Nation?

Short back and sides versus girly hippy locks. The cavaliers and the

roundheads.. one-nil to the pudding basins. Vietnam, crew cuts both

sides... no score draw."

;)

There is a really poiniant part in Good Morning Veitnam when Robin Williams' Veitnam friend has a doing in blowing something up and when he confronts him he says that North Veitnam is not the Americans are the enemy cos they came and made things worse for them.

Sorry, could you repeat that or translate it into English ? ;) :D

I think I get the gist - an ally of the USA (fighting WITH the USA) claimed the Americans were the enemy because they made the original problem worse ? :)

Ummmm....don't think that the Vietnam war is regarded as a nil-nil draw......the Yanks had their asses kicked (as Sergeant Elias so colloquially predicts in Platoon)...

OK, so the Vietnamese losses were over a million and the Yanks 'only' lost 52,000....but the Vietnamese kept their countries....North and South are still largely seperate entities.

The South hasn't changed much either...and most of the time you wouldn't know that you are in a Communist country.

Wars rarely achieve what they purport is their aim.....the thing is that they make some very rich people even richer....the cost of arms and muntions is obscene. Little wonder that the Americans dropped on Vietnam SIX times the tonnage of bombs dropped in the entire second World War!!

Just what the f**k they were bombing is open to conjecture.

Pass me that map of Iraq....I feel the need to revitalise certain sectors of the economy...................

Getting back to the film 'Platoon'....yep, fully agree with you Nelson....it looks like one of the very few (the last??) where they haven't totally rewritten history..........

I know, there's lots of others I aint seen yet as well. I'll get up to speed sometime.;) :D

Full Metal Jacket is another classic. Hamburger Hill was boring IMO. We go up the hill, we get shot back down the hill...we go up the hill, we get shot back down the hill...roll credits! ROFL :D

I've seen Apocalypse Now - that was superb.;)
