The injector connectors, as with all of those horrible little b******* connectors are meant to just be pulled off.. But, with age they go all brittle and tend to disintegrate - well, half of mine did..

Anyhow, the best way is to use a very small screwdriver, and prise out the little metal springclip from the back (thats the 'inside' side of the connector, the bit facing the centre of the engine), then the connectors will just slide off easily(ish), depending on how roasted-on they are.

To remove the plenum there is a good tech article on one of the US sites, but I can't find it now so here goes;

The plenum is held down by six or so large allen head bolts that are in the middle area of the plenum, but you will also need to remove all the coolant and vacuum lines that are underneath the plenum, as well as the PCV hoses..

It makes it *slightly* easier to remove the throttle bodies off the front of the plenum, but then you need new TB gaskets to reassemble - though you'll need a new gasket set anyway.

You'll need a very long allen key set for that, one that you can attach to a ratchet, as they are torqued up tight. Then you can get the water lines off the bottom of the TB's much more easily.

It basically comes down to a case of tug, see whats holding it down, and remove. But you'll find you'll end up cutting most of the water lines off... be warned, it's a long job the first time you do it!

Hope that helps - if you need any more info, just ask.

Oh look - Devil beat me to it with the link I was trying to remember :D

Another edit because Mr Duff just pointed out it's 8 bolts, and they're not allen head bolts.. Oops :)

Have you got the engine out yet? Its gonna have to come out anyway so do it now you will save HOURS in the long run. Plenum removal out of the car is a doddle cos you can look under it to see whats holding it etc.... Forget the top end for now - get the sump off thats where you're gonna find the damage.

In other words, pull the engine out, put it on a rotatable stand, flip it upside down, and remove the 20 odd bolts holding the sump on and remove it. Have a look around in there and I bet you find your answer.

In terms of a bent rod stoping the engine turning, if it bends in such a way so that it can hit the bottom of the cylinder wall on rotation of the crank....... well thats the answer LOL

How much is the excess on your policy? Are you sure you have had all this trouble? Are you sure some scum bag didn't just 'steal' your ZX?............................

Poor chap has enough troubles without being got at, unless you were making a joke. If so i appologise for thinking you could be so thoughtless.

Wasn't having a go, just putting forward the solution used by a few blokes I used to know in 'traffic division', who, when something really expensive happened to their bikes suddenly found they had been 'stolen'. Insurance paid out on the 'theft' and they got new bikes. Very naughty, and I can't condone it, but........if it the coppers can do it...............;)

Thanks agian ppl, I'm still trying to remove the engine but its not that easy in the snow, too wet and cold but I'm not going to give up that easly. Will let you all know how I'm geting on, thanks again ppl

Mathew

P.S. If anyone knows where I can get parts cheap can you let me know i.e a dead engine I can strip for parts etc. Thanks again, you ppl are the best, thanks

Sorry to hear bout the trouble. If your dead set on pulling the intake I can help! Having done this many times with the motor in and out it is posible. I could even send you a few pics of my spare motor to show you the things that you cant see. I'll tell you one thing its far easier to cut the water lines than it is to take them off. With the heat that the motor makes the hoses go bad just like the harness clips. These I have also replaced my self. I dont know how much the water hoses cost there but I did mine about 6 months ago and it cost me about 100 us. I got the parts right here in japan strait from nissan. could send parts overnite express!!

Not yet, except that the intakes for cylinders 4 and 5 are full of water. So an still stripping the engine to see what damage has been done.

Thanks everyone

  • 2 weeks later...

Sorry to hear of your troubles Mathew.

I bought my Z from a guy in Dec 2001 from a guy who had also hydrauliced the engine in a flood. In that case just one of the Conrods had bent with no other damage to the engine- I hope this is the same in your case!

I bought the car with the engine in a pile of bits and after costing gaskets etc since was forced to conclude this engine is better as a spare gradually being rebuilt with upgraded pistons etc. as funds allow.

In the meantime, desperate to get the car on the road, I concluded that the cheapest option was a good low mileage second- hand engine, and luckily my very good freind AndyZ pointed me at one in darkest Cornwall which I picked up at the end of 2002 for a bargain few hundred quid.

With luck it will mean we are on the road in the Spring - with several engines recently on here at very reasonable prices- could be an option for you as well.

Very best of luck

Thanks Dave, am still striping the engine so am still not sure whats wrong with it yet, will blitz it tomorroy and hope to get most of it striped then, EVEN IF IT'S STILL SNOWING. Maybe the cold snow will wake me up and get a move on with it, as I an now realy starting to miss driveing it and getting all the looks of other drivers.

Thanks BlackZX, I must admit I did think I was the only one round here with a Z but I was wrong. anyway I'm still striping the engine, god what a nightmare, but am haveing a little hassel at working out how the zorst manafold unbolts from the head I can get all the nuts except the one behind the turbo on the left hand side, (Trying to remove the heads) but cant seem to see it. BTW the engine is still in the car (I was going to remove the engine then strip it, BUT my oldman says its best to strip the heads off first then remove the block from the car).

Anyway thanks for the offer of help I may take you up on that.

Mathew

P.S. Where abouts are you, and how's the best way to contact you? Thanks again.

Take the block out now!!! Soooo much easier to remove the parts. Mine's just going back in at the moment. I didn't take anything off before pulling it..... As I said, A LOT easier!!!

At last, got the engine out yesterday, and striped it. I think I have found the problem, what do you think?:D

A_Bit_Bent.jpg

If anyone knows where I can get the parts Cheap then drop me a line

Thanks,

Mathew:D

o dear. i think that might be the problem. is that the only one thats bent. that looks just like mine was. check the oil sprayers underneath the bores as mine was hit by the bent conrod. you could try a secondhand engine, probably cheaper.

Is that the ONLY damage? May have a complete piston/rod assy for sale if you need it ;) Anything else damaged? Let me know ;)

CheerZ,

Andy

Thanks Andy, so far thats all, will check the rest tomorrow as I've the use of a workshop. The only other thing is the ring gear on the drive plate is damaged (Yes It's an auto). how much did you want for the piston/rod assy? and do you know anywhere I can get a set of rings, shells and gaskets?

Thanks Mate

Mathew:D

Best place is IMHO Courtesy Nissan in the states - it'll be cheaper than Nissan UK when you're getting the whole gasket set (it's not cheap!)..

For bearing shells, remember you'll need to get the grade numbers (stamped on the crank & rods, I think it was - the procedure for matching up the grade numbers to give to Nissan is in the manual).

Thanks everyone for your help, just got to get the parts and hopefully I'll be back on the road again.

Yahoo!!!! I'm Happy again!!!!!

Just finished striping the rest, and what do you know, Thats the only damage!!!.

Just the one rod and piston, yahoo!!! Well just need to get a new piston and rod anyway, so if anyone has a piston (Grade 2) and a rod (Big end Grade 1) that they want to sell (New or second hand), please, please drop me a line.

Don't even mind collecting the part!!!

A lesson here for those few who got carried away with all sorts of tales/thoughts of doom. This is exactly what I thought it "Should" be.

You do need to check that the damaged rod has not marked the bottom of the bore, I dont know about Z's but sometimes the bend, of the rod, can hit the bottom of the bore and put a dent in it, just file it off and then smooth is with wet&dry etc.
