Hmm.. Erm.. Auto's don't have flywheels - they have flexplates.. Similar thing, but does a totally different job.

Anyway, just wondering if the sound you are referring to is the parking pawls inside the gearbox, perhaps not disengaging totally..

Anyone who's ever put an auto into Park before you've properly stopped will know the sound (never done it in the Z, did it a couple of times in my old beater Bluebird though), sounds a bit like those flappers you used to fit to your pushbike as a kid, only more expensive sounding..

Just a guess really, but as it goes away when you shift to N, it is almost 100% certainly the gearbox.

If you can get riase the back (i.e. jack the rear wheels up). You should be able to identify where the noise is coming from.

Do you know the guy who fixed it ?. Because if it is the auto box then it's more work from him, most people will shy away from it.

hi guys thanx for the replies,

aaron, sound very viable, the sound is exactly like the way you described!!

but i dont think the guy would wanna touch it, to cure the prob would you have to open up the box??

smw, dont no if i can arrange that but good idea!

Andyduff, i know u also no ur stuff!!! any ideas please!!

cheers jaz

If its stopping in nuetral the brakes maybe binding a little, i'm probably way off the mark but i thought it sounded a bit less expensive.

TBH I'd say it was deffo the box. What warranty did the guy give you on the work? Why does he say its not the box? I think Aaron is on the right lines with this...

CheerZ,

Andy

99% sure this has to be gearbox if putting it in neutral gets rid of the noise. When you put it in neutral while moving, the engine is still moving and the prop is still moving so the only change is the gearbox.

The 1% doubt is that you are changing the load on the prop by putting the car into neutral so it COULD be a dodgy bearing or something in the drivetrain. Not likely though.

Dave

Glad everyone is agreeing with me :D

And yes Jaz, if it's the parking pawls (which it sounds very much like), he'll have to open up the gearbox to repair it..

Just as an aside - if he told you he reconditioned the flywheel, I'd find somewhere else to take it.. very quickly..

Auto boxes are, unfortunately, very complicated things, and very specialist items to repair. Your average mechanic wouldn't touch the insides of one with a bargepole..

And yes, I know the grammar in that last paragraph was diabolical :)

cheers fellas!

motors going bk to him after nw yrs, cos its also jumping up/down gears erratically! so il tell him about the parking pawls.

the box is still under warranty thats why i need to take it bk to him arron, cost me 1700 smackers!!!

and the box has been shite ever since i got it bk!!!! i wish id taken it to SE!!! MAC seems well chuffed with his...

oh well fingers crossed, keep you guys posted.
