. How old does your zed have to be to qualify for "classic insurance"?

I renewed my multi car policy today with Admiral for my Subaru Impreza and Mazda and asked for a quote for a n/a Fairlady circa 1998 with declared mods of body kit after market alloys, exhaust and an estimated value of £6k, quote was £240 full comp with protected no claims and a compulsory £100 excess.

Also adding a further car to policy I would get around £45 off the other two cars, so works out about £200.

Would a classic insurer yield any benefits?

Thanks.

A Classic insurer would be hoping that being registered as a classic that it won't spend all/most of its time in high risk environments e.g. Tesco car park etc. Also, many ask for a mileage limit and consider that you will be looking after your pride and joy.

I have my 99spec on a classic policy with Equity Red Star via Adrian Flux

If I may ask, more or less than £200?

It's to be driven as a weekend car only, the Subaru is the work horse for trolley dings and transporting my dogs.

It would be worthwhile getting a quote for the price of a phone call.

Definitely mate, also inquire over limited miles, could bring the insurance down by a fair bit.

Don't you have to be careful with "normal" insurance companies as if you claim they won't pay for the value of the mods?

No, you don't have to be careful, just honest. If your car has been modified in anyway from standard, tell them. Also, ask for an agreed value policy; this would be the payment that you'd receive should the car be written off. You will have to be quite specific with what you want from the policy and don't be put off if some companies won't insure you, keep shopping around.

They also like the car to be garaged. I payed £220 this year from classic car line. There is such a big difference between companies, depends where you live, how old, points, and many other things.

It'd be alright if you got agreed valuation, but do "normal" insurance companies offer this?

As I understand it, you have to declare the mods (obviously) and they charge you a premium for it, but they won't shell out for them if you claim, so it's a rip off. They'll only replace/pay for them as if they were standard. Well I'm pretty sure that's admirals policy anyway. Unlike specialist companies like flux etc who will pay out

Yes, this can be true, however most classic, prestige, performance or specialized insurance companies as Adrian Flux offer 'like for like' as part of the agreed valuation; this is what I have done along with many others. Obviously, depending on what you have modified from OEM will have an effect on the cost. Remember that you are the customer and detail what you require against what they can offer. I am with Flux with an agreed value, limited miles 6000, European insurance cover, European breakdown (spend too much time driving around Europe) with a cost of £290.

I(/mi dad ) got quoted £170 as he's 52, if you shop around you can probably get a quote for under £200, but always look at exactly what the insurance covers obv

Tried all the normal companies and quotes were crazy.

Went with Footman James, 98 TT, alloys and ICE declared, 2000 miles limit, I'm 53, 6 points and got it for 178 fully comp, no excess.

I don't understand how everyone else on here seems to get their insurance so cheap! Cheapest I could find was about £550 with flux, a fair few mods but nothing unusual, limited to 4000 miles, no points, yes I'm 25 but still, not that young!

I got quoted £4500 :(

Ouch, that's gonna hurt! £290 for me, would of been cheaper had I not insured 4 cars.

Yeah well I guess I'll just have to wait a year or too, and just drive some hatch
