Just advertising my interest in buying a Nissan 300zx Manual or Auto TT. I'm not fussy on the SWB/LWB, or the colour. Not looking to pay more than £2000 for one, and yes I am not expecting a lot for this sort of money! I intend to spend a lot more on it as a rolling project.

I own a Seat Leon Cupra R 05 plate with 86k on it and remapped to 280bhp. Body work is a lot to be desired (trolley dings, and car park T**ts) but has had a lot of money spent on upgrades, and maintenance. I'm mentioning this because there may be a deal to be done if someone is interested. If you are, I can provide pics. Otherwise I will just sell it separately, and put towards a less project-like Z.

I at least hope the 300zx is drivable to recover. If it is, I will travel far for it. If it is not, I can arrange collection if it isn't TOO far away. Unless delivery can be arranged?

Thanks for reading :)

You can usually buy the complete auto to manual convention set up for around 5/7 hundred ish (that's what I sold one for)

Or you could pay someone like mark Derby or Lee dent to do the job for not much more with the piece of mind that it has been done by an expert that's done it numerous times before.

Cheers :)

Martin told me you would be set back around £1.5k because you have to change the pedals and flywheel, clutch etc etc

Hmmm

I believe what I said was -

A drive in / drive out price is about £1500

I think Jeff used to do it for that, but not 100% sure on that one.

Lot less if you do it yourself but it is quite a big job.

I reckon your looking at a day or 2 to do the job yourself if you've never done it before but less if you know exactly what needs to be done.

The plan is to get its niggles sorted and MOT it. Drive it around occasionally until we move house. Then I can do some serious tinkering. At the moment it has a crappy battery, power steering is intermittent and it incontinent :blushing:

Had it started for a few seconds off a jump pack and reversed into it's space, that's literally it.

Just noticed you live in Wigan... not far from me (Chorley) we should arrange a meet at some point, always good to see more Zeds!

Come down and have a nosey if you like. You can tell me how much of a mistake I've made :D

When you say the power steering is intermittent... does your speedo work?

My first Zed had a dodgy speedo (known issue) and it caused the power steering to do some odd things at some quite inappropriate times!

Regarding manual conversions; me a friend did mine (again, on my old Zed) on his drive using ramps and axle stands and it took us 4 days. Although neither of us had worked on one of these cars before so that may have added to the timescale a little....

They are very addictive! Bought mine 12 months ago and had many ups and downs along the way.... absolutely love it though. We'll catch up soon:)

I'm going to guess the speedo doesnt work since it somehow managed to pass two MOT's with the same mileage, a year apart. I was going to top the ATF up and hope for the best. So could it be a speedo cable?

The manual conversion you did sounds inspiring since it only took you 4 days. I have a feeling it may take me a lot longer! Unfortunately have to move house before that ball rolls...

The power steering is speed-sensitive, making it lighter at low speeds and heavier at motorway speeds. If the speedo isn't working properly, you could find (as I did a couple of times) that you have parking speed steering on the motorway - not a pleasant sensation!

The issue is usually down to the solder on the rear of the speedo itself. If you search on this forum, there's a good tech write-up detailing what to look for and how to (hopefully) rectify it. It didn't work for me personally, but there are plenty of members who've solved their problem doing it. :thumbup1:

The steering is really quite bad, so much so I worry about driving it anywhere off the car park. It's all, or nothing..even when stationary and creates a terrible whine when turning. So with that said my instinct tells me it wouldn't be speedo? Also the HICAS light is on. I'm going to get it on stands tonight and throw check levels, pump and steering.

Hicas light is on because of low level of power steering fluid. Top it up and the light should go out but there must be a leak somewhere if the fluid is low.

If it's whining and if you can feel almost a juddering through the wheel when you turn it, then your level needs checking asap. If the Hicas light is on, that just backs that diagnosis up.

That's your first port of call, before you even think about the speedo. When you top the fluid up, don't forget to have the engine running and turn the wheel lock to lock to "bleed" the system.

Thanks for your advice Mondo, I'll jump on it after work. After that i think I will ponder over the drain pipe radiator hose/fix :cowboy: and why/how it has an efan rather than viscous...

  • Author

Wonder if it's just low because it's never been topped up. I have no history on this Z whatsoever. As far as it looks, it's been stood years. I agree there could be a leak, I'll find out later :D

I'm not far also, near Haydock Island. Have started bimbling about in mine recently while the weather has changed!

Hi mate, feel free to tut and kick the tyres on mine some time ;) maybe throw a few spanners at it...

Checked the Steering fluid and its well over MAX, so I can only presume its a wiring issue, or speedo.. Can diagnose more now as I just ripped out the radiator and pipeworkand battery to stickit on charge.

Lol! at that fan!

Get yourself an Oe viscous mate.

Shocking pipework and pathetic fan on the rad. Also so many pulley's, much squealing and not all of them connected. I have identified one as aircon pump. :saddam: Defo in need of a few ali pulley's at some stage ;)

Drivers side pulley is power steering, middle is waterpump, and passenger side is aircon.

I take it you can still bolt on a viscous fan onto the waterpump pulley?
