Does ne1 know the detailed workings of the cats on Zeds ?

Don't they have 3-way cats ?

Featured Replies

There's only one piece of info you need to know about the cats - remove them asap LOL Once they become full they need to use the litter tray - unfortunately the z32 wasn't fitted with one of these as Nissan assumed the cats would be removed before being filled up for reasons of MASS reduction :D LOL You can actually increase the performance of the cats by installing the nismo cat scratching post ™ which is a device fitted under the car and allows you to 'stretch' the cats to their full capabilities :D

I do have to say one thing though - doing a cat '3 ways' could be against the law in your region - check with the local authorities b4 proceeding with said depraved sexual act :D:D:D

I was asking because some ppl at work were talking about pre-heating the cats on cold start-up, and I want to know more about how they work on a 300 as they were a very advanced setup for a 1989 car. I remember reading something about how they are designed to compensate for cold starting emissions....

No more jokes please, I need info.:(

If you remove them they don't need pre-heating or after heating.

What is the MASS of the cats? :D

Yeah, you're dead funny !!!:D  :D

If you pre-heat cats in a microwave you can be arrested.

In the betterware catalogue they have a fur lined hooky basket thing which you hang on your radiator and that can be used to warm your cats. Unfortunately, by the time you have reinstalled the cats onto the car, most of the heat has departed.

Of course heat rises so if you pre-heated your cats then they would want to rise and that would effectively reduce the mass. Some stupid people don't realise this and remove their cats, thereby removing any possibility of warm cats making their car go faster.

For a slightly serious reply - not a subject I know a lot on but..

There were two catalyser systems on Z's, I think one was used on UK, Euro & US Z's, the other on Japanese cars.

Japanese cars only have the main catalytic convertors - which are not heated. However at idle, 7% extra fuel is injected, and air is fed into the exhaust just ahead of the CAT's, thus burning down there and heating up the CAT's more quickly.

US/Eur/UK Z's also have (AFAIK, could be wrong on the UK part) Pre-cats. These sit *right* behind the turbos in the elbow bend part, and heat up very quickly, for touch emissions laws where the first xx seconds after startup count..

HTH.

What's funny about not answering a question - especially when it's for someone's WORK ?!

I'm sorry, I just don't get it !!

aaron - Thanks:)

AFAIK US (&UK??) cars were only fitted with one precat and the xx to which Az referred was 55 seconds. I think one of the reasons Zeds started to get phased out in the US was because there is only room to fit one precat (steering gubbins in the way perhaps) and they were finding it impossible to meet the increasingly tight regs in places like California.

I believe they just decided to cease production in the STATES after they were selling less then a certain quota they had expceted.

Has anyone actually refiited cats to there car after removing them, make sure you have there claws removed FIRST :D

Can't fit a pre-cat on the drivers side because that is the bank which is slightly offset to the rear - in other words the turbo is much closer to the bulkhead.

What's wrong with having a laugh anyway??? :( I'm leaving....

There is nothing wrong with having a laugh...but when someone has asked a serious question, it is rude to ONLY crack a purile?/tiresome joke and NOT answer the question or say you don't know. Would you do that to someone in the pub ?

In this case, I DID say that I wanted to know for WORK reasons - I work for Shell and we talk about new engine developments----> so there was even less reason to ONLY crack a joke.

r u with me ?

Well if you worked for shell (im sure you do) and were talking engine development, why not just go back through (they must have a massive datatbase) regarding this type of information.

And of what relevance does a 13 year old engine design have on Shells current range of fuel>?

would be interesting to know the answer?

--------------------> Valid point - but info. management here is not what it should be - it can be like getting blood out of a stone - info. is power to some ppl, so it remains in their heads and not on paper/computer. Also, 300ZX is hardly a mainstream car, and this is what Shell is really only concerned about. Also, we are not experts on engines. We design/modify our oils and fuels for different engines. There are some ppl here with very good knowledge of engines, but I doubt they'd know the cat setup on a 300ZX - most ppl barely know what a 300ZX IS !

------------------------> I am just interested to know how cutting edge and unusual the cat setup on 300s is, and exactly how it works, simply because I own one. It's unlikely to be useful to Shell tho' - simply background which I could mention in a relevant meeting as it was mentioned that a new trend is to pre-heat cats for cold startup. As with many 300 characteristics/technologys, there were way ahead of their time.;)

It's almost certainly not cutting edge by current standards.. But I imagine it was in it's day..

It's also worth noting that as of 1994 (I believe), Nissan removed the AIV system - that's the setup of pipework and reed valves that pipe fresh air into the exhausts before the CATs..

(probably because the bl00dy things fill up with water all the time...)

You crack me up Nelson.

WTF are you doing having a go at people for having a laugh ? If it's so important to you then go and pay someone to find the answer. If you come on here trying to get knowledge to impress your colleagues then you might find it backfires. Most of us talk b0lll0cks even when we're trying to be serious !

Would I give you a serious answer in a pub ? No fonking way would I - what a fun night out that would be ! And I'm sure the same can be said for all the others who replied in the same way - we don't take life that seriously.

And before I finish - I'm having a bad week so apologies for ranting. It's not really like me to get wound up. But it DOES feel better to let it out !

Dave :(

I can see both sides of the argument here. First there is nothing wrong with having a laugh. Most of the best threads start this way, and as I remeber it happened alot on the old forum. However that is why we made a techincal fourm, becuase people including myself asked questions and ended up as threads of banter. As funny as it was it didnt help.

why am i hearing the theme tune to "some mothers do 'ave em" in my head while reading this thread??!! :D

Fair point Stu. I could argue that this is in 'General Chat' and therefore it's not too shocking that the responses were exactly that. However, I prefer to be honest and admit that I didn't check !

And to return to topic for a very brief moment, Nelson, I don't know the answer I'm afraid and will therefore get me coat.
