Hi Guys well i have just purchased a 91 TT auto after looking around for the last 6 months for the right price etc etc , now the car is an import and is therefore restricted , anybody know what the easiest way to remove this restriction is please , roll on the weekend and some dry tarmac

Several options:

1) Get a converter unit fitted so that everything reads in mph rather than kph. The limit will then be 180mph or so.

2) Get the car chipped. This will remove the limit.

3) Get your ECU socketed and get someone to read the contents of your old chip. They should then be able to make you a new chip exactly the same but with no speed limit.

4) Get an SLD (Speed Limit Defencer) which you need to wire in just before the ECU. This will remove the limit too.

I did 4) and I've now done 2). I could sell you the SLD if you liked. I'd just need to get around to taking it out of my car first!

Hi Dave,

How much do you want for this SLD ????

I think they're around £90 new, so £20?

As I say, if your speedo reads in kph and you're going to get it converted, that would take care of the limiter anyway, or if you plan to get it chipped, that would do it too.

If you do want the SLD, let me know.

Dave

Now i am really lost !! the car had the clocks converted 18 months ago , at a cost of £300 before by Keywest London, so i have phoned them to find out if they would have removed the limiter and they have said no that would have been an additional £250

Those prices seem a bit on the high side!

I think some people have had conversions done that have changed everything (speedo, odo, cruise, limiter) into mph and others have just have the speedo converted.

I think it just depends on where the converter box is placed, although there may well be different types too.

I remember a few years ago that there were lots of worries about the converters affecting the auto gearbox or the speed-sensitive steering, but I haven't heard that mentioned for a while.

well i will take the car out this weekend and if its still restricted I will take you up on your offer of your SLD for £20. is there an easier way of checking than doing 120 miles an hour ???

Not that I'm aware of. :D

The problem of kph to mph conversion screwing up other speed sensitive systems happens when fitting a convertor direct to the speed sender on the gearbox. I haven't actually ever seen one of these but have heard they exist. Does anyone know ? It could be an old wives tale.

The 'right' convertor fits onto the circuit board behind the clocks and affects speedo, cruise control and speed limiter.

As Dave says, those prices are silly. I paid £50 or so for mine, including easy to follow instructions.

On this subject, you need to understand what the speedo converter does to appreciate it's effect.

If you use a standard converter black box, as sold by Zcentre etc... All it will do is interupt the speed sensor signal from the gearbox. This is brilliant in it's simplicity as it interupts the pulse to the KPH unit and changes it's frequency to fool the speedo into thinking it's doing a different amount of KPH, this false figure does of course equate exactly to the conversion factor from KPH to MPH.

This therefore will convert everything to MPH, odometer, speedo, cruise control and the annoying chime at 110KPH (now 110MPH) if you've not unplugged it. And the maximum speed limit will now be 180mph instead of kmph, so unless you have a very souped up TT, shouldn't be too much of a worry!!

If you pay someone to actually change the speedo to a UK spec MPH unit, it will cost £100's! and I think may lead to other complications.

Also...

My logic on other systems being affected, speed sensitive steering could be affected slightly as this will also be fooled into thinking you are going much slower than you really are, but this would have a marginal effect, being slightly heavier at quite low speeds than it was (is my logic right on this??)

On the autobox issue, surely gear changing where altered by the computer is based on its understanding of current RPM as opposed to actual speed isn't it? (again be interested to get other opinions on this, as I've just converted mine)

The speedo has been changed to UK spec 180 miles per hour twice, looking at the receipts that came with the car the first company made a mess of the job hense the expense on the second job of repairing the first job. I Think i will just have to find a nice bit of road and see what happens :(

Paul

I think you must be right regarding the auto box as it changes nicely and when floored will change on red-line , but as regards the steering it seems really light all the time , could do with been a little heavier at a higher speed.

Actually Bagins I think you're right after scraching my head for 5 mins, as the steering is designed to get heavier at higher speeds, with the car going faster than it thinks it is, steering will be lighter until much higher speed is obtained, so assuming you are driving at about 110MPH, the car thinks you are only doing about 70ish?? or even more worrying at 80MPH car steering behaves as if you are doing 50!!

Unless someone can tell me the steering power levels out at quite a low speed, or readings are taken/sensed at a different point to the speedo, this is quite worrying! (As i've not driven the car since conversion!!)

Paul - the steering doesn't seem to change much.. But, you're right about the autobox..

Some convertors - not all - completely b*gger up the autobox gearchange at full throttle.. Mine was like that - the box changed up & down perfectly, unless you were at WOT, in which case it totally refused to change up, as it thought you were going a lot slower than you actually were..

like i say the gear change is good even my foot hard down changes as it should on the red-line every time , but i hear what your saying at speed regarding the light steering , i also have a new saab turbo and at slow speed it is really light but the faster you go the heavier it gets quite noticably , mind you it's not really a jap import, where as i do not notice this on the Z

Ah, you mean they've exchanged the speedo for a UK one? That's what I did to mine.

Or do you mean that a converter was fitted and you still have the Japanese speedo?

A UK spec speedo has marking for both mph and kph. A j spec one only has one set of markings.

If they just swapped the clocks over you will still have the limiter.

Good question

There are no markings for kmh so I presume its a J Spec speedo :(

That's what they do most of the time - they put a converter on and the kmh markings just become mph markings. They also put a sticker saying MPH over the KMH in the middle.

If they'd replaced the speedo for a UK unit, I could understand the price they charged a bit more, but that would have meant that the limiter was almost certainly still in place.

Best thing to do is find a private test track and test out the limiter. :D

that should not be a problem , i just wish it would stop raining as i have still not managed to drive the car in dry conditions since i bought it two weeks ago

>>>I think they're around £90 new, so £20?

;)

Dave, didn't you buy off me for less?

Ha!

Simon Pass

No, I didn't. Your memory is obviously quite poor! :D

I'll be selling it with instructions too... :p

hopefully in English;)
