Hi Guys,

 

As you may kniow from my previous post i drove back from Luton and when i got home the rear wheel was held on by 2 studs as 3 of them had sheared off. I checked the front and one of the studs must have previously sheared off as it was not rattling around in the centrecap.

 

Due to my total lack of knowledge and lack of mechanical skills, I've tried calling mobile mechanics and they have all said they have not done that job on one of these cars and do not know what is involved? Do they bash out? Will you need heat? Will it need to be a total strip down job?

 

Anyone know how hard it is to do these? Is it something that is relatively easy or a total mare of a job?

I done one of mine recently.

 

With the disk and caliper out of the way I used a lump hammer to knock the dodgy one out.

 

To fit the new ones I got a bolt the same size as the wheel nuts and a load of wwashersas spacers then ratcheted the bolt up tight and it will slowly pull the new wheel stud into place.

 

Dont use your existing wheel nuts as you will fudge them up.

Yeah Lexx, Got the link thanks and had a read through it but id always intended to get someone else to do the work. I'm not overly good with this stuff and need the car done ASAP as i'll be using it for work. The thing that got me was when the guys were saying "do they need heat to free them" and stuff i really felt like saying "how the hell do i know, you're the mechanic".

 

My fear is that it'll be a reletvely staright forward job, but since i'm at work they'll try to rip me off by saying "ooh, it was a bitch of a job....we had to heat up every nut.......then getting the new ones to fit......ooohhhh" "That'll be £££££ thankyou"

 

I do intend to print off that guide for whoever does the job though so the link is much appreciated :)

 

i also have new wheel nuts too. Got the tuner ones this time.

Nearest to you would likely be JM Imports (although not the cheapest).

If I was home on leave I'd do it for you. But I'm away for another week yet, and then down in Coventry for the 25th Anniversary meet.

You underestimate my lack of mechanical skills Batman. My fear is that if i start to do it myself (after work), and as crap with this stuff as i am, can't finish it then the car is on axle stands on the road. :(

 

I honestly don't think i'd get to a garage without the wheel falling off. I have garages i trust but it would be the cost of a trailer to get it there as well. I think i was VERY lucky to get home without the wheel falling off. That's why i was researching/calling mobile mechanics.

 

Just enquired at a garage at pretty much the top of my street that i forgot was there as it's attached to a little car sales place. it's literally 2 blocks away so if i drive at 10mph i may get there. I'm waiting for a call back so i'll see what he says.

The hardest part of the whole thing is probably pulling the disk off.

Thanks Batman. I've already ordered a full set for both rears and then after finding one of the front ones had sheared too, a full set for the fronts. may as well just get them all done and be done with it.

 

As someone mentioned in my original thread though, why would the studs snap? someone mentioned lack of spigots but i'm pretty sure my Honda has no spigots on the front and apart from a little wheel wobble at high speeds, the studs haven't snapped. I guess i need to work out why. Age? I really don't want this happening again.

Yeah, that's what I kinda thought might have been the cause myself.

Think about the stresses a wheel hub goes through.

A wheel hub has to be centred to reduce the lateral stresses on wheels studs. Even more so if (like most cars) they have been over tightened.

 

If (for example) your wheels have a CB of 70mm and do not have spigot rings, then that is 3.9mm of possible lateral movement (300zx CB is 66.1mm). The only thing stopping that movement is your wheel studs. So that is where all the force of acceleration, deceleration, pot holes, suspension travel is loaded through.

 

Since spigot rings cost about £2 each, is it really worth not having them and then potentially snapping all your new wheel studs.....possibly whilst on the road?

Yeah, you're absolutely right. If the car has no spigots I'll definitely get some.

Just wondered, if i do need to get Spigot rings, what size reducer do i need to get? Obviously the outer size of the spigot is determined by the wheel but what is the inner size needed that goes round the hub part on a zed?
