Has anyone else been getting popup messages with adverts on?

I dont mean an explorer window with an advert. I mean the type of message you get with the NET SEND command or with chat32 found on Win 95 and 98?

Attached is a screen grab of whats been coming up on my screen. I emailed my ISP and some young twit who has probably had a crash course in the internet is trying to tell me, who has had a PC since the AMSTRAD 1512 and 1640 days and has had the internet for over 10 years and who is doing a Computer Science degree of which a large portion of it is networking and internet secuitry, that its some thing wrong with my computer.

Is any one else getting these? Does any one know of a program that I can use that tells me all the traffic that comes through my computer? I had one years ago that did it.

I want to get the IP of the people who are sending these so I get complain to the right IPS.

I remember reading something about this on the Register I think. It's a 'feature' of Messenger that can be exploited to enable direct advertising.

Don't you just LOVE Micro$haft !!!

Thing is its not a Microsoft Messenger hole. Its a message sent using net send. For example

NET SEND xx.xxx.xxx.xxx "Type you message here"

Will send a message to what ever IP address you put and will appear like a box like on my screen grab. You can do it with names of Domians or workgroups or computer names instead of the IP address, but thats for the LAN.

Try it. Get your own IP address and send your self one. Put in your computer name.

This command is only found on Win NT Win 2000 or Win XP. Dont think 95 or 98 has it. Not sure about ME. But all versions of windows can recieve them.

Ahh, just read that link.

Pissing MicroShaft!

There's more to this than meets the eye - and I gotta start work soon or I don't get paid!

What I found so far is that it the Text To Kelly is fairly new. There's one poor blogger who posted that he got it and everyone is posting to him to ask advice. Link is http://www.madmusingsof.me.uk/archives/005907.html Note he doesn't use messenger.

So if it is something to do with the mobile SMS you've been using, try complaining to these guys whose website is currently down http://www.icstis.org.uk/

Yeah, get one that blocks inbound connections !!!! LOL

I use ZoneAlarm pro on my firewall machine and the basic (free) ZoneAlarm on the other machines behind the firewall. Remember that a good firewall should also filter traffic leaving as well as arriving. The one that comes with XP is pretty poor.

Stu,

when you have the message on screen, run netstat from the command line and look for port 4950-9 netbios-ssn entries from external machines

TCP cps-ws:4952 http://www.cps.net:netbios-ssn TIME_WAIT

TCP cps-ws:4957 http://www.cps.net:netbios-ssn TIME_WAIT

i use a linux machine as my adsl router and firewall, and use zonealarm free version on machines behind

ive recently started recieving these. turned off the messaging service and no more spam :)

I'd forgotten all about this - the contractor who works upstairs (and has his own ISDN 'net connection) got one of these last week and asked me what it was..

Took a while to explain that it wasn't MSN messenger, but Windows Messaging..

Personally I just run Linux - no more Windows security holes (just Linux security holes instead :))

try gargling with Tcp/ip it is very good for viruses.

;)

the only way to stop some malicious gits hacking into your computer is unplug it, anything else is damage limitation.

I blame all those wierd cults with their dead cows.

Strange lot!

Blah blah blah blah blah blah blah.

That's about how much I can add to this one.
