I wrote a while ago about an issue I was havin with the car pulling away in second sometimes and not wanting to change up from there.

I originally thought it was down to the hid's I fitted as it first started after they were installed.

I refitted the original bulbs and it stopped for a while but it is now back.

it doesn't happen all the time and it only happens from start up. if I turn the car off and on again it usually goes away and all is fine.

it did it this morning as I was leaving for work but this time I noticed that the power light was flashing for a short time.

I didn't count how many flashes there were as I wasn't expecting it.

does this mean that there is a fault with the gearbox?

I thought the Power light related to the power steering. I could be wrong though!

I'm nearly 100% sure the power light is to do with the power switch on the auto gearbox, as when you stuff your foot to the floor it illuminates.

Sounds like your box keeps going into safety/limp mode, it seems to be an electrical issue though rather than mechanical or pressure related, i think JeffTT has dealt with a similar issue in the past, worth giving him a call or PM.

In my view i would look at the auto ecu, connectors and even inside to look for water ingress or corrosion on the board.

As mentioned above the flashing power light is to tell you there is a stored fault code that needs reading, this is via the built in diagnostic and by following the link below detailing how to do it and what the codes mean will help you get to the cause of the problem hopefully.

The auto box ecu takes readings from lots of areas to make gear change selection times and even a low battery can cause it to have a bad day, as groover mentioned it sounds like your box is defaulting to limp home which basically is a single gear usually 3rd. generally this will be some kind of power or cable fault, often more than one issue, speed sensing internal gear cluster speed sensor or power supply, we have even seen simply faulty ecu do this, the battery voltage when start up is also an area which can trigger a code, not always a fault but a code all the same.

Do the diagnostic and post back the error codes, be aware some zeds will not allow the in built diagnostic to work, no reason other than they can, may take a few attempts.

Thanks for the help guys (got to love the help and advise from all you diamonds out there).

Just did the diagnostic check and it came back all clear!?

What now? (Please don't suggest a manual conversion  as if I had the money it would be top of my list!)

You mentioned that even the battery could be the cause!?

I found that my battery negative terminal was very loose today, could that have possibly been the cause? Although it hasn't had the problem since I did the gearbox diagnostic check.

You may be getting an intermittent problem with the box or ecu,But what i will say, that came to mind when you mentioned your headlights, there is a multiplug behind the drivers headlight, i would check the pins in the plug for corrosion, you may have nudged the plug when fitting the bulbs which would have caused the problem you are having as part of the autobox loom goes to that plug.

Image is for wiring to a manual conversion, but shows the plug
