Hi does anyone know much about projectors.

I want to add 1 in my man cave for movies and gaming. Im getting lost within all the spec's.

The part of the room I want to convert is 18ft×9ft using 100" screen which is ideal for the wall.

From what I understand the higher the lumens and ratio the better? I want 1080p and possibly 3D.

I see that there are various screens from matt, grey and shiney whats ideal?

Also ive noticed that some projectors have different lenses some fixed and others adjustable for smaller rooms but nothing states the minimal room required to gain a 1080p picture on an 100" screen.

Any help would be great thanks Dan

Thanks for the advice I was looking to spend about 800 on a projector. Maybe yhe optoma hd25e will be enough or hd65 or 33 if im not going to see much difference between 720p or 1080p.

I shall try and get a vid of mine playing avatar in 720p

the HD65 (what i have) is pretty much the HD66 and was the first projector they show cased and used as a test bed for testing the 3D-XL unit on.

There is another way to get 3D via projector, without going down the 3D-XL route which can add an extra £250 ontop, and thats with Nvidia's 3D vision, but pay close attention to supported projector list on Nvidia's site for that, as the 3D vision software will only work with whats on that list (there is a drive hack, but too much fiddling to get to work) but with the N3D vision kit, at least it will play 3D games and movies.

I picked my HD65 up on ebay for £100, with a bulb with only 400 hours into its 2k life span. i got it cheap as the color wheel has shattered inside, so when it arrived it was in black and white lol, i waited 6 months for a color wheel for the HD65 to appear on ebay, as optoma would not sell parts to anyone who isnt an affiliated optoma parts specialist. i was lucky that a guy in the US had 10 units of the color wheel, £25 and another £14 for shipping and i fixed it my self.

The advice id give with a second hand unit, is do not trust the lamp hours, as they can be reset anyway with out the lamp being changed, so if you get a second hand unit, at least buy a new lamp to slot in, regardless of the lamp hours claim. the lamps dim over time and you loose brightness.

Thanks for the advice bud.

Ive been looking at a 2nd hand models as well infocus in82 and also the HD65 and 33.

You had a good deal there I wish something like that would pop up on ebay.

A video would be great :).

Worth considering the bulb prices too, they variey a lot.

I'm on my second screen, the first was smaller, but the difference in quality of picture was amazing.

The second screen is a bit noisy, but havnt had any problems with ripples or bends.

I'd advise against eBay, sign up to avforums, they look after there stuff.

If your having a defined room, you could consider fabricing the walls to stop light problems, allthough small I do suffer from this as it's a longing room

Well after much research I've bought everything needed to convert my spare room in to a cinema.

I think ive got the best availble for the money if reviews and recommendations are anything to go by!

I bought most of the gear except the cinema seats from Richer sounds and i found them very helpful.

I've already stripped the room back to bare bones so I've now got to start the grafting measuring everything to exact specifications while trying to cram everything in to the limited space I have.

I've got enough cables to run around the world and back so most of the weekend I'm going to be chasing the walls out.

I can't wait until it's finished.

Electrics is complete...added extra sockets spot lights and fused spurs in the ceiling to power the projector and screen.

Finished chasing the walls last night for the surround sound cables.

Been measuring everything out over and over again to ensure best results for the speakers and projector.

I have been geeking it off on the AVforums.

Believe it or not there is so much involved it getting it all right to achieve the best out of the equipment.

Plastering is next...I have a guy coming this evening for a quote.

I've gone a bit mad with lighting etc and a feature wall. I've ordered The Avengers mural which i think will look cool with the lighting etc.

sneak preview of the mural..The room is just over 4 metres long with the acoustic matting on the walls around the screen this mural will cover the remaining wall.

I went for Lay z boy electric cinema seats true V.I.P treatment :)

Can't wait to get it finished.
