detonation

After going for a drive out today i have devoloped a det problem.

it happens around 5-6psi on boost and after that runs fine.

There is no knock sensor on the car so cant be that, and i have a apexi avcr set to 0.9bar and at 80% injector duty.

There are no air leaks and i havd a k&n air filter fitted.

any ideas please?

could it be the plugs ? what heat range are thay

dont know, but they are standard plugs. done less than 5000miles

N00b question here: what does detonation sound like...? Is it like pinking (for the older generation out there)...?

  • Author

it was like a misfire noise but really fast and stuttered at 5psi. almost like a knock on a empty container.

change the plugs if there stock and heat range 5 and your running just under a bar of boost mite be i good idea what ever you do to change to a heat range 7. you rae running just shy of a bar of boost are you on the stock fueling map? or do you have a chip or after market ecu

im running a john dixon chip. at 1bar it runs fine its just at 5-6psi that its happening.

Ive just been in garage and changed the passenger side o2 sensor and for some reason the tdc had changed from 15btdc to 25btdc.

ive managed to get it back down to 19btdc but its reading as running lean on conzult(not full conzult).

Now need to work out how to stop it been so lean.

so changimg the o2 sensor made it go from 15d to 25d ??

you really need to have a look at the plugs if there getting to hot its going to ignite the fuel before it should. i once had a prelude with a idle issue and little misfire evey one who looked at it dismisted the plugs until a guy pulled them out and one was hammerd thay thay only did 1000 miles on them to change he plugs the car was fixed.

Dont know if it is the o2 change thats changed the btdc, but last time i had it on it was at 15.

will get the plugs taken out and check them.

if your running bar or boost and chip. you should change the heat range of the plug any how to be on the safe side

took car out for a drive and at 19btdc it runs like crap.

back into garage and adjusted it to 23btdc and its alot better, not perfect but better.

engine still running on the lean side so really need to get that sorted asap.

will be looking at plugs later today.

checking timing on consult as ive got lightened pulley wheel so cant use that for it.

Checking the timing via the conZult is a mistake, the conzult only displays what the timing is supposed to be at that particular time given the water temp, air and other inputs. The only way you check what the actual timing is at any time is via a timing light.

The change from the previous time you checked it ( was 15deg and now 25deg) maybe because you have an issue with the neutral switch or even the tps if the throttle closed switch is open.

The fault you have you said occurs at certain psi of boost could be an issue with either the afm causing fueling problems or with the cas unit causing ignition issues.

Before you go any further you need (must) get the timing checked with a timing light, the lightweight pulley should be marked up and if not then you can set it to tdc manually and mark the pulley against the 0 (zero) mark.

From there you can start looking for the issue.

thankyou jeff. Is there a marker for me to see where the tdc is when not got any markings on the lightened pulley?

How are you checking your timimg?

Also, is it a manual or auto?

sorry i forgot to say its a manual.

N00b question here: what does detonation sound like...? Is it like pinking (for the older generation out there)...?

Detonation sounds like a single coffee bean in a tin rattling around...... This is very bad for the engine/pistons, so don't give ur 300 some beans while this is happening.

having a think of possibilities today and wondered if the standard boost sensor i refitted on sunday (which doesn't seem to work as the gauge on the clocks doesn't move) could be part of the problem as this has only happened since i did some work on the car.

I changed the dash clocks as mine were broke.

Refitted the boost sensor for the speedo cluster.

changed the passenger side o2 sensor.

After doing these jobs i have had boost problems where it feels like the engine detting.

Im hoping this isnt the turbos on there way out.
