It's finally time to bring my self into the 21st century. I'm after a new head unit, one similar to the one I have, (single din with pop out screen)

just a bit more modern, USB, SD card, Bluetooth etc...

I like the idea of having youtube video's on my phone and been able to watch them on the screen. I'm sure in this day and age that must be possible. I also like the idea of a reverse camera, but installing it somewhere low at the front, sort of a speed bump watcher. Just the problem of mounting a camera, without it looking ugly as hell.

I've had a look about, but the major shops I could find are wanting £300+ and they weren't exactly all singing and dancing.

Ebay however has a few nice ones, but I don't really fancy paying the import charges from China or Aus. I did find this one from the UK

Looks like it'd do the trick, however there is the annoying fact that i'm struggling to remedy in which it lights up blue. I would love a red one. And it seems to be aimed more at the apple user, which I am not.

On the other hand I've noticed a couple come with Android software and it got me thinking, how hard would it be to rig something up that would serve all the multimedia functions. but also run something like Datascan or consult? I just think it would be really cool to have a load of dials and gauges displayed on the screen while driving.

I've noticed a few carputer's on ebay but they look like a lot of work, and I imagine them to be slow and awkward to use, has anybody done this? and what's the functionality like?

I've been wondering similar things recently - what I thought would be cool is a tablet (apple or itunes) set into the dash which is locked to bespoke software, working as a media player and car diagnostics! I'm working as an app developer at the moment and don't see this being too crazy - it must have beeen done before I imagine.

Im wondering why more people haven't thought of the raspberry pi for all your incar entertainment needs http://www.raspberrypi.org/ easy to use, easy to mod, has a SD card slot, fully modifiable, can use GPS, a camera, runs linux or can, most likely run windows too if you wanted, most certainly be able to do the web

I'm still thinking about an iPad install, so music, sat nav etc are covered.

They already do apps to control the music, and I've heard there is a consult app out there somewhere :)

Sounds good!... Would probably look pretty hot, not sure the dimensions work.

Have seen a couple, a fair bit of cutting and fibreglass but it is doable :)

I actually like the full size ipad, pretty fills the centre console with nice big screen :)

Depends what is wanted I guess, the mini would still have all the functions but not take over the dash

I think Pbryantknight had an ipad install, although it did look like a lot of work. And bird has a double din install that looks nice. but I wasn't too keen on cutting the center console up yet, and I like my little flappy cubby hole thing underneath.

I do like the sound of this, although i'm struggling to get a price. and would still need to get a single din motorised monitor too. I like the idea of building it yourself though, so that it would be built to the requirements, but I bet it would be a chew about fitting it to the speakers and the subs.

Dazvert has an ipad or something in his dash and Peter Bryant (local member) had one in his

I have seen a z with the ipad fitted. It was fitted vertically. He didnt have any vents just a flush fitted ipad in the centre. Ipad mini would be good smaller and can still retain some of the orginal look. Personally i didnt like it but i think the mini would look better.

There are units android based but limited function . When i was looking for a unit for mine i was after a double din but because i didnt find any worth the tripple figures i settled with a flip screen with front and back camera dvd/cd player, radio, iphone/ipod connection and aux. im no fan of the iphone but when it comes to connecting a device they are all for apple products!!!! And i have an 16gb iphone 4s connected with all my music and videos on it which stays in the car and better sound quality then the aux all controlled from the unit.
