Hey guys , since i had my engine rebuilt i never had my speedo working and i finally got ' new' u.k clocks fitted yesterday from jeff , i had previously noticed that on a track place the revs would cut off at 4.5k at high speeds around 120mph , but it would get there in a blink of an eye. I never had this issue , i ordered a chip from the u.s to match the spec and bloke who tried fitting it just knackered the whole thing so i asked jeff for a chipped ecu and because the car has been running well i never really noticed such thing, so now im thinking could it be a limiter on the ecu itself? I can't really see anything else.

iirc the speed limiter is part of ecu chip so a Jeff chip will remove it (or more likely raise the speed limit to a ridiculous amount which the car will never reach ie 300mph, which effectively removes it).

 

Has the Jeff chip been fitted? If so then I don't why you still have a limiter on there, one for the experts there.

Yup he fitted it to a ecu and just sent it over and i have no idea why its limited to 120mph really, i was thinking it was because of the other clocks and the speedo not working and now the only thing i can think of is something to do with the ecu/chip, i'll try getting in touch with him tomorrow and see what he thinks.

I have the same problem at about 120mph on a jap TT auto, although I'm on an oem ecu. So watching this thread like a hawk!!!

the stock jap ecu chip is limited to 180km/h which is roughly 112 mph

the stock uk ecu chip is limited to 180mph

 

the ecu gets the speed signal from the speedo

 

fitting a kmph to mph converter box to the speedo fools the jap ecu into thinking you are doing 180km/h when you are actually doing 180mph hence "raising "the limiter

 

if you just change the dial face on a jap speedo so it reads in miles (face goes to 120mph) then the limiter will still be at 180kmph/112mph unless you get a new ecu chip to actually raise the limit point

 

i believe that changing a jap car to uk clocks still leaves the limit point at 180kmph/112mph and requires an ecu chip to raise it, however i know others have disagreed with me on this

With the UK Speedo and different chip that has a 300 + mph speed limit you should not have any speed limit, is the cut a hard one ? as the normal speed limit is a real soft effect that makes it seem more like the engine at max rather than a cut.

 

It is possible the afm or the cas unit has an issue, either of these can cause a similar result, worth a drive with a ConZult connected to see what is happening with the timing and air flow when the cut occurs.

yeah, mine had a cutting out issue at around 4k before I bought it. Car dealer tried to fob it off as a limiter that had been put on for insurance purposes by previous owner,lol. Problem was it cut out dead and only kicked back in if u took ur foot off gas pedal quickly, otherwise it died completely. I ponted out that this was actually quite a dangerous thing for an insurance company to do, particularly if u were pulling out at a junction or roundabout and that a limiter should just peak out, like u say Jeff, as if its maxed out....

The cutting out on mine was in fact the MAF which I replaced and all is now fine....

Keep us updated on this mate as I'm intrigued as to why you still have a limiter.
