clutch issues

hmmm...seems like loads of people are having problems with their clutch, like me!

I've bled my clutch thoroughly, but it still doesn't disengage the clutch properly. I cant get the car into 1st and 2nd (just).

My question is how do you tell if the clutch master cylinder is on it way out?

If I pump mine loads while the car is off eventually I get some resistance in it, but when I turn the ignition it sinks right to the floor again.

Any ideas?

Ta.

If you have checked for leaks on the master/slave I would adjust the clutch pedal next... and when I say that I mean the rod that goes into the master cylinder. Wind it in a couple of turns.

cheers Jez,

The slave is a brand spanker as is the flexible hose, I can't see any leaks anywhere and have already wound the adjuster as far as it will go into the booster.

I'm going to have one more mess about then will probably plum for a new master cylinder. (the one I got was off a crashed 300 in a scrappy's, so it's probably 10 years old anyway!)

Ben,

Have you also bled the secondary bleed valve situated next to the power steering resevoir on the drivers side inner-wing?

I replaced my slave and dint know about the secondary valve and spent the best part of a week with the car off the road!

Hopefully you filled the slave with fluid before putting it on the car, otherwise air could be trapped causing problems. I assume your should be able to bleed it out, although difficult.

hmmm...I didn't fill up the slave before putting it on.

How much travel should I get out of the slave cylinder piston? Mine seems to travel around an inch.

I'm beginning to wonder about my master cylinder, perhaps I'm better off just going for a new one.

I read on TT.net that from 96 onwards they're upgraded slighty, does anyone know if they just fit right on?

If you bought a new slave it will have a bigger cylinder that a pre 92 car. The master, dunno. Whatever, you have to remember that what they say on the US forum applys to parts sold on the US, you could buy a old model here.

ben,

I had the same problem as you describe.

Try to get a full adjustment by a knowledgeable nissan dealer, one that handled lots of zx's in the past.

It is not just adjustment of pedal travel etc. that will do the trick but a whole sequence of adjustment on all clutch parts/ master/slave and booster pumps.

I am lucky to have my car serviced by Nissan Belgium itself and they did a torough job on the clutch function which is buttersmooth now, either warm or cold.

cheers
