I have followed this cicuit below and have put in a three prong switch as shown with the hope of illuminating it when my leds are lit (switch in the on position).

I can only get the led on the switch to illuminate when the leds are off and the switch is in the off position. Where have I gone wrong?

The issue is two fold, the switch is been used to switch an earth when its designed to switch a live supply ( it is internally wiried for this) when the leds are switch off IE: the switch open, the switch led is getting a back feed supply through the filament bulbs, a few changes will sort it.

Have you got the switch wired correctly? I don't think it's a two way switch, it should just be a single switch switching between two of the terminals ie the common and L1. the extra terminal is just a neutral (earth) to allow the L.E.D to light. just try a couple of different combinations of the switch if you haven't got a multimeter.

Thanks guys, I tried different combinations but could only get the light to stay on when my leds were off!? Anyway gone with Jeffs diagram now, thanks :)

Sounds like you have the switch in the normally closed position as been said put a buzzer through the switch to determine the make or break

The problem is the circuit led lights require only a small forward current to light up, the led in the switch itself is of little resistance and will allow enough current to pass through when when switch off allowing the circuit leds to come on.
