Goddam detonation!!

Sorry guys! that old chestnut again.

Neved had detonation before. Added a scramble switch at the weekend to give me 5 seconds of 1.3 bar (bit cheeky on stock injectors I know!). Tried it out and got a bit of detting, eased off immediately and now the damned car won't boost to the maximum 1 bar I had previously used OK without detting :-( Could this be plug tip damage or similar caused by my initial scramble boost madness??

'90 Jap Auto TT, Blitz SUS, SE chip and Apex'i AVC-R **standard exhaust**

One other point of note, set the AVC-R up to use gear based learning and feedback 'properly' at the weekend. I have to say the boost is overshooting 1 bar a bit...

Any ideas....please!!

Cheers!

Rob, check your throttle bodies - there are some small vac lines which take a vac feed from them. Under high boost conditions these can blow right off. Passenger side one comes out underneath the boost hose at the front and the drivers side one comes out towards the drivers wing from under the boost hose... Check all your other vac lines too to make sure they haven't blown off...

It may well be worth checking the plugs.....

Rob,

I got my first experience of detting (I think) tonight. I stuck some normal unleaded in the tank as I was out of fuel and after when the boost was high I got a kind of "beans in a tin" sound. I guess this was detting from what I've read on here. I then went and filled the rest of the tank with Optimax and the problem went away. Did you change you fuel ?

Hi Darren, no, I always use Optimax. I've pretty well traced my problems to the changes I made to boost controller settings, enabled some gear based learning and feedback bits and bobs and kept overshooting my max boost. Dropped the boost off and changed a few other settings and it seems to be OK again now (not so quick now though :-\)

Cheers,

RobH
