Replacing rear steering rack

Hi All,

I have to replace my damaged rear steering rack. It's actually only one of the connecting arms and bolt that's bent - would it be easier to replace just the arm or is it likely I've damaged the the power cylinder etc too?? (not leaking).

Anybody got a how to relating to this??

TIA!

you can have just the arm and joint replaced.

one dealer told me that the rack was faulty and needed replacing

second opinion from another told me that it was ball joint and arm.

hmm.. wonder which i went for wink.gif

Thanks Craig,

But which is the easier option?? I'm not doing the work myself as I can't get access to a ramp - I'll be dammed if I'm getting a Nissan dealership to do it so it's gotta be a backstreet garage job :-(

Advice appreciated...

new rack is about 1000 quid

arm and joint was about 120 quid

are you sure it is definitely not the rack damaged?

the labour was quoted 1 to 2 hours by the dealer that did the work (while i was on hols in scarboro) which was taken from the workshop manual

it took them all day because they did not follow the manual properly, but i only got charged the quoted price.

they tried to do it without removing the rack thinking it would be quicker, but ended up removing it....

as long as you make the back street guy aware

i would check in with a dealer first, just to see what they quote

I replaced a rod on mine in about 15 mins - tho i got a ramp!!

its an easy job to do, just remove the boots, lock the opposite side & unscrew.

dont forget you will need to have a wheel alignment done (also done my own - got that too!!! biggrin.gif )

arm was about £50 or so +vat

ROBH,

Where abouts are you??

If your near the Slough / Reading area I have a good mechanic.

If you in Kent, I believe thats where PAULC is?? Is it you Paul who works at a Merc dealers??

Then you can get it done with the safe knowledge its been done properly.
