Turbo whistle

Hi All,

Since upping the boost and changing the chip, I've noticed a bit of a whistle from the turbos (presumably) when I boot it. Is this normal or have I got a leak somewhere? It's only quiet but it's definately there where it wasn't before.

I got a small puff of smoke this morning too when I floored it, the car has about 70K on it - is this the first sign of turbo/seal failure?

Cheers,

RobH

what chip and boost are you running?

Is it smoke or soot.

I get a puff of soot every now and then when I floor it.

Stuart

My turbos have whistled under load since I had them.

If you have an aftermarket induction then its probly that thats whistling or its the wastegates venting excess boost.Any other whistle from Turbos themselves is bad as its a sign of an imbalance.

hi,

just been reading turbo technics site and it says if the turbos whistle,it because the turbo is out of balance!!!!!!!!!!incorrect rebuild!!!!

sorry for this guys but go and look at the site just saying what it says!!!!!!!!!

Neil, there is many reasons why you will here a whistle noise, most of the reasons why are explained in the previous posts.

Rob is running stock turbos, I can't see anywhere in this post saying he has them rebuilt, so you stating that incorrect rebuild is the reason for the noise is therefore wrong. When running higher boost, you will hear the wastegates venting excessive boost more.

A puff of black sooty smoke is okay, that's what it probably is, maybe the chip slightly overfueling which is fine. If you think it's oil get someone to hold a piece of card behind the exhaust when you start it and see if oil is running down it or not

Are you sure it's a whistle and not a kind of sucking nose on throttle (the intake)? Even if it does whistle, providing you continue to change the oil often enough and don't suddenly change the weight they could run for years without a problem.

As for the chip, SE told me they didn't believe in chips a few years ago. I don't know what they remap, but 1 bar should be your maximum for stock injectors. Really 0.9 is a more safe maximum if you run high revs and full load often. Especially in this heat.

marczxt,

the original thread started and no he didn't have rebuilt turbo's but some of the others have like wild turkey for instance

and the line "you will hear wastgates venting more"??????????????? seen as the wastegates only vent exhaust gases to the exhaust i doubt very much you notice any increase in noise as you are sat in the car,

the people behind you might though!!!!

another reason turbos whistle is that they go out of balance.

AS they get older carbon builds up on the shaft and they go out of balance!!!

AND when you turn up the boost you also increase the rpm of the turbo how else do you think you get more boost this may take the turbo into a new area that it has not been before,i.e instead of 100000rpm it may be 130000rpm so and build up of carbon on the shaft will take the turbo out of balance!!!

If you are running hybrid turbo with mega boost they have to run a bigger clearance on the bearings so they don't seize(extra heat involved)this is why some turbos whistle but they should only whistle at higher than standard boost at say 1 bar up getting louder as the revs climb, but this should be more of a thrusting noise(whooshing??)than a whistle.

when i first posted my answer i did actually state 2 reasons i.e incorrect balance,,,,inncorrect rebuild!!!!!!!!!!!!

Point taken Neil, misread the last line of your post as being one reason. I suppose Rob needs to clarify the type of noise he is hearing, ie high pitched whistle, or a lower pitched whooshing noise

Every turbo vehicle i've ever encountered has a whistle when the boost kicks in.

In an ideal world they'd be silent but remember these little turbines rotate at very high RPM it's no wonder they make a high frequency noise.

ello,

my tt doesn't whistle even on 12psi,neither does my corsa turbo,or my friends renault!!!

but a friends rs turbo started to whistle and two days of thrashing it around and the turbo shaft snapped in 2 but luckly the intercooler(aftercooler)saved him from a rebuild, just had to buy a new intercooler with the turbo!!!!

as for ROBH maybe take it to a couple of turbo companies and let them listen to it

give you there verdict

better safe than £££££££££

Thanks for that guys. It's not a really intrusive whistle, more like the type you hear on a truck only quieter. The smoke is not a regular thing, not seen any for days.

I think I'm just panicking to be honest - every little noise makes me nervous, got no chance paying for a turbo rebuild at the mo'and it'd be just my luck if they f*cked up.

Cheers!!
