Not familiar with the e39, but at that mileage the turbo would be my concern... look for very regular oil changes with a decent oil. If he's happy for you to get the spanners out, check the crankcase breather and EGR for clogging - good indication of the how well it's been looked after.

My Brother has jus sold his on a 52 plate 177,000 miles FSH and it drove like

it had done 60,000 no majour issues at all just the usual sevicable stuff.

Phone never stopped ringing at £2,450 and got full asking

Turbos on those are not a big worry, same as my 330d which has 160,000 on it.

I wouldn't have thought you'd go a lot above the current price, perhaps £3,500 max. I reckon my 330d Touring is only worth about £3k and that's a year newer and tourings always fetch a better price.

Not long sold a 2002,1 owner for £3000 with full BMW service history, brilliant car and quick with it, would pull quicker than my 528 mid range. Suspension is the weakest part on them and with an mot due soon check there is no vibrations whilst driving/braking

Does he definitely do the mileage to warrant a diesel variant, the petrol variety is much more refined and a whole heap less complex to fix, the minimal fuel savings could be wiped out with a potentially big bill that diesels can throw up.
