I have been having poor starting issues for a while now and i discovered yesterday that my S2 ptu wires had found there way to the alternator belt and the green and orange wire had worn through and was touching each other. Anyway I cut and re soldered the wires thinking I would solve my poor starting problem. However i still have the same poor starting as before.

My question is with the 2 wires touching could i of fryed/screwed the PTU up or is there other things that would be causing my poor starting.

Thanks

Have you given it a good drive since sorting the wire? Could maybe be that the alternator wasn't giving the battery a full charge due to the friction caused by the PTU wires and it just needs a good blast now to fully charge it?

i dont think its battery as i only replaced it a couple of weeks ago.

'Poor starting', does that mean it turns over lively enough without firing or it is very weary and barely cranks.

If it's the latter you need to check the battery and alternator, what about you having some drain somewhere, this sounds like your problem to me, you need to check the dark current?

I am suspecting you changed the battery a few weeks ago and you are still having the same issues, so it sounds like you can rule that out :mad2:

Also try seeing if it starts better on jump leads, if it's better on leads sure it would suggest power supply issue rather than engine/loom/ptu etc?

No it turns over as it should just doesnt seem to fire for ages but then eventually it always starts. But when it fires up after cranking a bit it runs lumpy for few secounds then clears its self and runs fine. Also has bit of blue smoke but not ever time.

Lumpiness could be due to excess fuel, these babies don't like constant starting and long periods of turning the key as fuel is pumping away.

Got decent plugs in it? maybe try cleaning all the usual electrical connections and even worth doing a baasic ECU diagnostic to see if it's throwing up an ECU temp code sometimes.

After having the same problem with a couple of engines, i would suggest you try a compression test.

Are you sure that all cylinders are firing up? Do the revs stabilise once started. Can you hear the injectors clicking (screwdriver method)?

I have been putting this off to be honest as i probably wont like the results  but i think this will be my next step. In regards to the connections and injectors they should be good as i have put a new engine wiring loom in and recently had the plenum off and cleaned and bought new seals for all the injectors. And yeah the revs do come good and it runs great once its started.

With the blue smoke am i looking at rings? oil steem seals? etc? and will i be able to tell with the compression test results?

It should give u a good idea if its a internal problem. Compression testers are only £20 ,so not a expensive test to do.
