Is this detonation?

Have had new uprated turbos fitted and re-buiobuild etc etc. Have finished running in. The car is flying............

 

However, when at say 4500 revs...motorway driving and floor it I get a rattling type noise possibly comming from top end of engine. (Cant be sure at 120+ mph)

 

Could it be under fueling? and is this detonation?

Yep sure is, not enough fuel for the boost you are running, you need an upgraded chip like JWT or SE,Mines

first of drop the boost.

secondly you will need a decent ecu that can give you the correct fuelling.

 

Get it set up on a rolling road.

what boost are you running? and what spec turbos?

Hi Andy, i will check the best i can tommoro, but to be honest only had zx 3 weeks so still feeling my way about so to speak,mine is a bit of a dark horse really,the previous owner imported the car exactly 2 years ago as is,i was up at zed world 2 weeks ago jeff had quick look,he found a few trick bits and looked at ecu found to be HKS and other things on it, i'm up at zedworld sat so i will get him to have better look and write it all down for us,as for the boost i cant set it myself its pre set its a Greddy/Trust gauge, but when i floor it stock gauge in dash stops at +14 and the Greddy goes as far as i remember past 1.5,not knowing much realy on these cars it needs a real good look over,its certainly knocking out shit loads of power,its got a 93 recon box last year and new diff earlier this year, not surprised at that, i'm taking it easy with it most of time but its very hard as these scooby/v6vectra/rsturbo/etc,etc

/etc keep pissing me of with there antics, getting 1 foot from my rear bumper is starting to get me mad, mind you its great feeling when they see ya dissapering like a speeding bullet,ha,ha,ha.

well HKS dont make an ecu as such.

and 1.5 bar on what fuel,i think you are looking for trouble there.

HKS make some add on units like the VPC ect.

Did the ECU box say HKS on it?

I think that its the flash module leading into the ecu that says HKS, the actual ecu box is plasterd in a very colourful jap tuning shop sticker and another by different name across area where the sides of ecu box meet, sorry cant be more specific, will try for more info tomoro zx3.jpg

what fuel are you guys using when you get detonation ?

 

if you running on normal unleaded, then change to super at least, and Optimax if you have it locally, and see if you still get detonation.

 

if you still get it on that, then consider some octane booster until you find out how to reduce the boost pressure

1.5 bar is major boost. Boring though it sounds, I wouldn't risk driving it. If it's fixed boost then it's probably done with boost jets. I'd change these to drop the boost until you've got your ECU etc sorted out.

 

This much boost could lead to MAJOR expense.

My bet is you have a HKS FCON V or similar - its a piggy back fuel/ignition timing controller for the ecu. If you are running 1.5 Bar then I am not at all surprised its detting!!!!! This car sounds like a real dark horse - could be a pig to tune etc.. Trouble is you don't know what size injectors you have etc... Is there another box in the car with EVC written on it? In the glove box etc??? If not then the boost could either be set so high by either having the wastegates wound up OR by fitting boost jets. If its the wastegates that have been used to adjust then you need some real specialist help here. Also the FCON requires specialist knowledge/equipment to set it up - there are only a few UK companies that can do this...

 

Having just read what I've written it sounds like I'm saying your car is truoble frown.gif I am not saying this at all - I am saying you need to find out EXACTLY what has been fitted to the car and how its been set up. DO NOT rush into any solution - be very carefull and you'll be ok.

 

I'd say your car is detting because the fueling has been setup for higher air temps. In the UK the air is cooler so is more dense - this means you need more fuel for the extra oxygen. If the mixture is weak then the car will dett under load... Maybe a quick fix solution would be to up the fuel rail pressure slightly. Again this would need to be done by a specialist...

Tony, my 91TT Auto is running ok on 1.35bar boost but has been modified with upgraded turbos, 555injectors, JWT ECU, HKS EVC 4, decatt pipes, a full mongoose exhaust and single induction kit. I run on Optimax ok normally but sometimes I get a little pinking when revving to red line if the air temp changes significantly and I have to pop a bottle of octane booster in to quieten it. Before I had the boost controller setup correctly it would overboost to 1.53 bar and pink its head off. The EVC brought some level of control to it. See you Saturday at Jeff's.
