Auto to Manual

Hi all,

Excuse my ignorance - but is it possible to convert an auto to manual?? Recent posts hint that it is...what's involved?? I think if my Auto box ever dies I'd prefer to switch to man - which would be cheaper, recon Auto or convert to manual??

Cheers!

A couple of us have done this (although I took the easy route and paid someone else to do it, Shaunmac did the work him self) and it works well.

An autobox refurb will cost in the region of £1000-£1500 incl removal/fitting etc. A conversion from auto to manual is a lot of work and will cost up to £1000, plus you have to supply the gearbox and all the gubbins to go with it. (and there are lots, but I have an exact list if you're interested)

It's not a bad thing to do, the lower rations of a manual box with the extra torque of an auto engine makes a VERY fast car in the low and midrange, although it might lose out a bit on topend to a car with turbos from a manual, but how often do you get to do 150+ anyway ?

Of course you may never get to this if your autobox doesn't croak, so a cheap insurance policy would be to get an uprated oil cooler for the autobox and it'll probably last a few years longer (plus change the oil every couple of years)
