Blue spots and judder on grooved brake discs

When I brake from 130+ the brakes are vibrating considerably more than ABS feedback feels like. Checked the discs and I can see blue spots around a centre line on both front discs and the pads have loads of depth left? Is this vibration and blue spots down to warping of the discs? They are tarox 40 groove and have only been on the car a year!! Bugger!!!

If the discs are blueing then they are almost certainly overheating, which is likely to lead to warping and vibes etc. If they're not too worn then you may be able to get them skimmed and perhaps improve the ducting to the discs for better cooling.

Been told that as they are grooved discs they can't be skimmed?

I am using race spec pads in my car and have blue spotted and warped my discs (all four)in less than 1000 miles. I am trying to find a local engineering firm who will skim the discs without paying the garages cut. Both slotted and/or grooved disks are more likely too suffer from this problem than the solid disks i'm afraid

Are dimpled or drilled discs better grooved ones then? Will have to replace them sometime so might aswell start looking for best for the front. What do people suggest as the car is used and abused a lot and I don't want to be replacing discs every year.

Firstly - dont waste your money on slotted discs.

Secondly Make sure that you are the tyre shop Dont Overtorque the Wheel nuts - 90% of warpage is Down to just that.

God is coming ...and he dont have stock turbos . . .

Are slotted the same as grooved? OK someone tell me the ones to go for. I originally wanted drilled and 4 grooves fitted and I got Tarox 40 grooves and was told that they were better than drilled. Obviously not correct! Is now a good time to consider upgrading the front brakes with some larger discs and better calipers like an AP Racing kit or is that major £££'s and no real benefit?

I have tried grooved discs they warped and have seen Drilled discs that have cracked and warped from the heat.

Have you looked at Heat Treated discs?

Porterfield do heat treated(and cryo treated-unmeltable!). They come plain as standard, but you can pay extra to get them slotted(grooved) or drilled.

I will be placing an order from Paul at Whifbitz for the Porterfield Heat treated Discs at the start of next month(£88 each, plain) to go with my Porterfield pads he got me(well cheap cheers mate)

I remember one member on here(Jez) saying he was very impressed with the Heat Treated Discs and expected them to last as long has he had his Z!!

Or, you could get a set of R33/R34 GTR calipers(Brembo) and discs for approx £500, but as your car is running alot of power you may have to get uprated Skyline Discs and Pads to go with the GTR calipers! eek.gif

Firstly - dont waste your money on slotted discs.

Whys this mate? I always thought slotted(grooved) were good at de-glazing the pad so removing fade.

Well why not try a set of brembos of a skyline.

I can get new skyline discs for £340 squid and if you get calipers your sitting pretty.

You can get any disc skimmed and Drilled discs are usually best, if they have been done the right way. Porshe are renowned for having the best braking setup on any car and just have a good look at the discs wink.gif

OK so drilled discs only and not grooved at all are best for the front of a 300zxTT and heat treated as these will resist warping. Is this correct?

As I don't want to upgrade calipers as well at the moment I need to find someone to supply these? Is Whifbitz the best supplier?

Re: Heat treated Discs/ Whifbitz

I have ordered Porterfield Carbon Pads from Paul at Whifbitz http://www.whifbitz.co.uk/contact.htm , I sent a cheque, waited a bit and got my pads via UPS. So good service and no messing. I will be ordering from him again.

Paul said he can supply Porterfield Heat treated discs for £88 each(plain not drilled). Bear in mind these come from the US so have to take delivery time into consideration. Email him and see what he can do.

Apart from that I dont know of another source of Heat treated discs in the UK.

Porterfield Disc page http://www.porterfield-brakes.com/parts.htm Note: You can order direct from Porterfield if you wish, I didnt what to deal with tax, duty etc cos I'm lazy like that. smile.gif

Question mate: What condition are your calipers? If they have never be re-conditioned they may benefit from new seals etc, I think some of the guys on here have reconditioned there calipers(prevents sticking pistons and other issues associated with age.
