engine cutting out :((

Dear all,

Please help! My Z cut out on the way to work at low speed today and wouldn't re-start. No mis firing at all. After waiting for the AA geezer for 30 mins, he prodded a few fuses and it restarted. It stopped again after running perfectly for approx 7 miles. AA man arrived again, it stopped again after apprx 1 mile. It cuts out as I'm slowing down.

Seems like something's overheating. It's got power to the plugs and fuel to the injectors...

It's now at the main dealers :-(

Any ideas anyone?

TIA!!

My first thought would be a problem with the power transistor. Try getting a known good one and swap it over to confirm.

If it is then don't let Nissan sell you the old version, there is an uprated replacement part and you can guarantee that they won't know about it. Best to buy from Courtesy and ifit it yourself.

Mine did it when i first got the car 2 years ago, & as Andy said its probably the PTU unit on the belt cover.

They are very prone to corrosion, the contacts in mine were as green as grass.

Clean all contacts (plugs & unit) VERY carefully - mine hasn't missed a beat since smile.gif.

Cheers guys!

If the power transistor is the same thing as the ignition amplifier then you are correct!

Makem sure you get the Type II PTU :-

Old one is on the left, new on the right. Nissan UK probably won't have a clue what you're on about !

Also they are about £320 here or £130 ish from Courtesy in the U.S!!

Hmmm...

I've repaired it using the tech link on Andy P's page. Seems to be working OK but how long for is my concern...

That aluminium solder is a right pain in the ar*e to work with.

Nissan in the UK were actually charging £180 for the part, courtesy - $178

Thanks for your help...

I moved mine about a year ago after my first PTU crabbed out within a day of buying the damn thing. Silver solder legs just lift off contacts when hot. Still got a replacement and moved it. Existing loom fits perfectly and located PTU close to battery on inner wing. Temp check shows it runs much cooler there and it is shielded well from rain etc. I know others have moved em to the front of the car close to the bumper etc. Though obviously some shielding would be needed.

Car has had no probs since ( touch wood). My advice would be move it whatever PTU you run.

Just a passing thought about the dreaded PTU...
