Turbo problems?

My 1990 standard UK spec auto TT went in recently for a replacement auto box to be fitted. I guessed it was probably a good time to have the turbos reconditioned as I had got blue smoke coming from one set of pipes...particularly on tick-over.

The main dealers reckoned that it was probably the oil seal in the turbo. The car has 56k on the clock.

I had both turbos taken off and reconditioned....both had new seals fitted. These were then refitted and the whole thing put back together....I wasn't present when the garage restarted the motor....but they reckoned it was the best smokescreen this side of the latest Goverment press release!

The garage are adamant that the turbos are 'f**ked'....they are flooding with oil. The people that reconditioned them are saying...no way....now that the turbos have been done the oil is obviously not flowing out quick enough...they are suggesting that this is not a rare occurence and indicates something wrong with the engines breathing.

I am inclined to think that this is 'b*llocks'as I don't see that it should make this kind of difference. Whats more is that the garage are also assuring me that there is nothing whatsoever wrong with the engines breathing. I've sent the turbos away (yep, box off again and engine out...ho,hum)

to another specialist to confirm if the turbos are indeed shite. I can feel a law suit coming on.

I was wondering if any of you other guys have had any similar problems?

From memory..

If the PCV valves (Positive Crankcase Ventilation, I believe) are blocked, that can cause a sharp rise in oil pressure in the block - though I think the rear main seal usually leaks first (do you have any other leaks, abnormally high pressure?)

Anyway, back on track, if they were blocked and the whole system was getting pressurised beyond spec, then the oil /could/ have trouble getting out of the turbo into the (over)pressurised sump..

Though in any case I doubt it should be causing that much smoke on tickover, especially when warm (since oil pressure is RPM relative on these cars).

HTH,

Az

No mate, no high pressure....garage have checked all breathing and say that it is fine. They insist that the turbos are f**ked.

Oil pressure is the usual.....start up around 40-50 and gradually drop until the gauge is showing zero 'cos of the crap senders.
