hi are there any specialist tool i need to remove a socketed chip from the ecu

No, just a soldering iron, a solder sucker and some patience.

can someone post a pic of a socketed ecu as im not sure about mine

they do sell them... but you can remove it yourself..

 

the trick is to pry it out slowly and evenly.. without damaging anything else as well.

 

this is a cheap type one....

let goggle search be your friend... (not a 300zx ecu)

but it will look like this without the chip in it...

do the new chips plug in or do they still have to be soldierd as well

just plug in.... it is a tight fit.... Ooh Mrs!!!!

You remove the old chip, replace it with a socket and then you can swap chips over easily in the future.

hey Andy I think he has to determine if he has or hasn't a socked chip before he attacks it with blow torch...lol...

I've done dozens and dozens of these, all the hard way with a separate solder sucker - I wish I'd known that these were available - gonna have to get one now ...

I just use a screwdriver to lever the chip out gently.

As long as your very careful you can use a small flat blade screwdriver to prize the chip off. I'd also recommend an antistatic wrist band just to be on the safe side, static can fry a chip instantly.

 

 

EDIT: ONLY works on a socketed chip not a soldered one!

It's for a different type of chip - the square ones used as BIOS chips etc -they have very small hooks that fit into the corners of the socket.

No, it's the same, for PLCC type devices. If you're going to buy one then get one of the simple looking ones that I showed earlier - they do work.
