when braking

just noticed a scraping noise when stopping,my rear pads are gone!down to back plate.

i thought that the rear brakes on a zed were only for parking only(handbrake)

but after hearing them catch when im braking maybe i'm wrong,or is it just sticking.

do zeds use front and back when braking???

Yep, but the fronts do most of the work when braking.

The handbrake works on a different system to the rear caliper.

The rear disc has a sort of drum brake setup that works on the inside of disc "hat" with a seperate set of "shoes", its hard to explain without pictures!! biggrin.gif

The advantage of having this system is if your rear discs are heated up after a hard drive you can put the handbrake on without warping your discs! The Skyline R32 GTR also had the same set-up.

Not actually true unfortunately - the reason you have drum brakes on the handbrake is so that as the brakes cool down they come on harder - if they used the disks then as it cooled down the disk would shrink slightly, pulling away from the pad and letting your car roll into the river... As drums cool they shrink onto the shoes which causes them to come on harder....

Are you being serious?

All cars use front and rear brakes?

The brembo brakes sold by 3g are just replacment discs for the stock oem units.

The discs just happen to be made by BREMBO (like 99% of the worlds cars lol)

They are worth replacing with these as they work out ata better price then the nissan oe ones.

The reason I read is that once you stop the pads act as insulators on hot discs and cause warpage due to the disc cooling unevenly. This is one of the reasons you typically see race cars up on axle stands immediately after a race with the mechanics turning the wheels a bit every 30 secs.

Obviously the fact about drums shrinking onto the shoes is true, but I don't think it's the primary reason in this case.

Oh yes it is wink.gif This is the primary reason - the fact that it doesn't warp your disks is a bonus - check any other road going car - unless some may have some trick mechanism to hold the pads tight - all others have drums and discs on the back!!! You're surely not gonna tell me that a 1.7l Volvo 460 is worried about warping the rear discs due to heat soak??? biggrin.gif

CheerZ,

Andy

Well the 'trick' mechanism is the stretch in the handbrake cable that keeps the pads on tight. I've had several cars with discs on the back, but none have had drums as well (can't admit to sinking as low as a Volvo though smile.gif)
