Smokin' like a goodun

If it ain't one thing its another, i think i need a bottomless wallet. Within the last 500 miles me car has started to smoke, very slight at first and now it chuckes it out, smelly thick blue smoke when its cold. I can leave it on tick over for 15 mins to warm it up and it still smokes even though its up temperature, but when i drive it its stops after 2mins, then it doesn't smoke again until its stone cold. I have noticed when de-accelerating I can hear a sucking noise that I didn't notice before. Performance wise haven't really noticed any difference. I gutted the CATS about a 1000 miles ago, apart from that the car is standard and got nearly 70,000 on the clock. Do you think that this is the Turbo Seals or something else sinister.I know taking out the CATS can blow the Turbo Seals so if I replace them, how can I stop them from going again, do I need a Dump Valve fitted. Could you please explanation simple cause Im not up on the Technical side of things. Any opnions appreciated. Dave

Dave have had some good results by lowering the level of oil in the engine. The dip stick is so inacurate that I have found putting a max 3 litres in a smokey car (depends on car ??) that the smoking is reduced or stopped almost completely, I am sure it is a breather problem but as I stated last week on a thread this was a well know thing with Sierra Cosworths when I had one, was to not run it on the "full" mark on the dip stick but below and it worked. Just a thought and worth a try,but please do not lower the level too much!!!

Hope that helps

hi there thanx fof your suggestion jeff. i tried it but didnt make any difference but anyway if it did i would still have to get the engine sorted.have you or anyone else got an idea wot it is?can a garage tell wot it is without a major engine strip??help anybody!!

Difficult one to diagnose but I wouldn't jump straight to the turbo seals diagnosis. If it's doing it from cold then perhaps it's a valve seal seaping oil while the car is standing still overnight.

Does it always do it ? Normally if it's a valve seal, it will depend on the position of the camshaft when you switch the engine off so it will do it sometimes but not others. I had this on my Sierra although I never bothered to fix it wink.gif

hairsy, the last week it has smoked everyday i have started it. it will not clear untill i take it for a spin. i can leave it on tickover for 20 mins then rev it and it pours out. drive down the road and one min later its gone. a bit of a mistery?????

What type of Oil are you using?

2 days after I bought my Z whilst on the way to work, I got stuck in traffic for 20 mins and I have smoke pissing out aswell. However, since changing to Mobil Motorsport Oil, NOT Mobil 1, I have not had one puff of smoke and I bought the car last September.

Mobil Motorsport is 0w-40 and so remains slightly thicker when it gets to running temperature than Mobil 1.

Many fellow Z owners use Castrol Magnetec but I think in the end of the day, you should use which ever oil suits your car and you feel most comfortable with.

Keep in mind that the mobil Motorsport is a bit pricey at 33.99 for 4Ltrs.

Hi Cos, yes mate it was smoking before my last oil change, then i changed it 300 miles ago and I put in Mobile 1 0/40 P.S 29.99 at my local and its not made any difference.what now?????????????????

Look at the posts under 'interesting or what?'

Eric (Lymon) has posted an intersting link that might out some light on the issue.

today i fiddled with all the breather pipes and tried to check as best i could. i checked for back pressure in the engine and the didnt seem to be any.so i suppose next week it will have to go to an expert for their opinion and repair. is there any body in the east of england who can do it???????
