Hi guys, quick one.

Now i'm the first person to advocate full safety gear including pumped air mask, fully extracted booth, etc... when using 2Pk paint or clearcoat...but...

In the real world, does anyone spray the stuff with minimal protection, i'm talking about small/med sized items, say from a bonnet panel to a spoiler..

just thought i'd ask...before you all drop down dead !!

Oh dear... I await the side effects :( . What about for cellulose paints?

From what i gather, cellulose just needs usual protection, carbon filter mask, extraction if poss...i'm sure chris will correct me if i'm wrong.

You are perfectly correct on cellulose Rich, its 2 pack thats the killer, it contains isocyanates,,,, LETHAL WHEN INHALED,

You will find that many bodyshops now are going down the water base route now, but not as good finish as 2 pack unfortunateley

So a quick spray on a 2ft x 1ft panel with 2pk clear coat is not recommended?...even if i hold my breath...

No Lol, you can buy a proper particulate mask for about £15 which is suitable according to my paint supplier for short term use. I have done some 2k spraying in my garage on engine parts and primered headlight panel and wing mirrors. As long as you have the mask, spray suit and goggles and gloves you should be ok.

The danger is not just breathing it in, it can get into the pores of your skin and the paint is fine, is the hardner that contains the isocynates.

Groover, is this mask one of the ones you are talking about?

Its made by 3M Ffa2p3d 4255 Dust Mask Tools Respiratory Protection

ive used that kind before they are good , paper overalls and latex examination gloves with the wrist band of the overalls taped round them ..and teh hood up as well mate ...as said its the cyanide in the hardner thats a killer ..once absorbed into the body it stays for ages especialy in the liver , and has compound effects ie gets more vicious every time you absorb more....meaning you only have to absorb smaller and smaller quantities to get the full blown effects

Yes mate, thats the one.

A good quality mask is fine , sprayers use full paper overalls and air fed masks cos they,re using it daily and IIRC you can get obsorbsion through the skin hence the full cover.

Using a small amount every now and again shouldn,t give you any problems as long as your careful , but don,t quote me on that ! lol

I've resprayed a full car in a garage with the doors shut in a paper overall an a half decent cartrige mask and i'm not dead, yet LOL.

I did that too, but in a T-shirt and no mask :death:

I was as high as a kite, which was quite nice actually :) (I doubt my internal organs are saying that tho....)

That makes the three of us... But I've suffered no side effects apart from the occasional nose bleed, wheezing cough and constant migrane

With good ventilation and a good activated charcoal respirator you'll be fine. Don't **** around spraying 2k with no mask though, that's for retards.
