It's the fan to cool the temp sensor for the climate control.May be 3in1 would do the trick.

P.s it works all the time.

Fan in the roof? I thought id found every bit of my z but didnt even see one, where is it?

Mine's made a sort of quiet buzzing noise since I bought the car - I thought it was normal, obviously not. If anybody does know how to shut it up I'd appreciate it..

Cheers,

RobH

same things happening to my Zed, but not got round to doing anything about it yet.

Found this in a differen tpost while looking though

"On the buzzing - if you pull the little console that has the map lights in it down (it's just clipped into the roof trim), you'll find a small fan in there - it's probably that buzzing.. take it out and clean it up, see if you can lubricate it, and see if that stops the buzzing.."

The fan is actually to pass air from the upper cabin over the temp sensor. There are also temp sensors in the footwell. This is how the aircon knows where to send the heat - have you noticed how sometimes it blasts hot air at your feet and other times it sends it to the screen and from the centre vent?

The fan is like a PC CPU fan and a bit fiddly to fix once the bearing has dried out and clogged with dust. Take it out and you may find a small seal over the bearing. Take it off and oil the spindle and generally clean all the dust from the fan itself.

It is mounted behind the vented panel for the interior lights.

Aha - thanks Chris, I had no idea about all these aircon sensors. I thought it was telepathic or bloody minded or something.

Chris, is yours a J import? Mine is and there seems to be no way to control the aircon apart from set the temp and let the computer do the rest.

2 qs

1) Is there a way of testing the footwell sensors?

2) Other than opening the windows WHEN IT GETS BLOODY NOISY there does not appear to be any way of getting a little air movement or fresh air in the cabin without starting the aircon fully. Is this right or have I missed something muppetly obvious?

TIA - Gio

...for fresh air, hit the auto button then the econ button - it lets air in without switching on the aircon. Obviously it will only be as cool as the air outside, or it will warm the outside air if your setting is higher than the outside temp. Use the high and low fan setting as desired.

Jesus!!!

This will stop the Z steaming up on wet days like mine does posted 14 months ago and no answer!

Well done Jack TOP MAN biggrin.gif

Here's a few things you might not know.

If you set the air con to Econ (Economy) it switches off the compressor and as has been said just uses the air from outside and heats it if needed. As the compressor is not being driven you get better fuel economy. The only time the compressor is required is when cooling the air to below the outside air temp.

If you floor the throttle the ECU turns off the compressor for a while to give you more power! biggrin.gif

If the upper cabin is cold and the footwell is warm, the upper fans will come on fast and hot to quickly heat the upper area to the same overall temp. This is why sometimes the fans blast out fast and sometimes they don't.

In addition to the upper cabin, lower cabin and outside ambient temp sensors there is also a sun-load sensor to compensate for the heating effect of the sun! (don't ask me where this is, i've always wondered)

The system operates differently according to all these different sensors so it basicaly does what it wants - AUTO.

There is a diagnostic mode you can use to test out the fans etc:

Hope this helps to explain why it seems to have a mind of its own - literaly.

It's a very complex system.
