April 11, 200224 yr Sad to say but I still have the crappy stock air filter. How long should they last when driving mainly on crappy country roads? Waht are the sympoms of them starting to become blocked?
April 11, 200224 yr One easy way to find out: Open up the stock air box and have a look at the condition of the filters. When new they should be mostly red cardboardy type material. When blocked up they are covered in greasy black gunk. Not too expensive to replace with proper Nissan jobbies (I think they're about £15 each from Nelson). One symptom of them being blocked up is high petrol consumption and rough-ish idle/pickup, ie., slight hesitation. Really, it is not difficult to open up the airbox to have a quick peek. Good luck and if you want an aftermarket cone filter let me know Danny
April 12, 200224 yr Thanks Danny. I have done it before but since laziness comes as second nature I thought I'd try some sensible diagnosis before getting the socket set out. What would I expect to get out of a performance cone filter if the rest of the car was standard (it used to have an extra 4 psi of boost until SE fixed my cracked cylinder head. Now only have standard boost. Sigh!!!!). I had thought of the SE system since they claim it's the only one that keeps the Air Flow Meter untouched. Are there better alternatives. An one final question. How much extra on the insurance for a cone filter. I seem to have no end of trouble getting insured at sensible rates despite a clean driving record because of !"£$% in Sierras and HGVs thincking that the rear of my car is a target.
April 12, 200224 yr The one MJP supplied me with, Stillen/K&N, bolts onto the air flow meter. COmes in single and double cones. ------------------ John Newcomb www.geocities.com/jn300zxtt
April 12, 200224 yr A cone filter such as the ones supplied by JWT (= rebadged K&N) will help the engine breath more freely, which results in more midrange punch. How much punch I can't tell you as there isn't a set value for it - there are those who quote a minimal +8bhp and those that say adding a single cone filter adds as much as 18bhp to a Twin Turbo setup. To me the figures are meaningless, it's the additional punch that makes it feel worthwhile! If you're interested, I can sort you out with a good JWT chip & Induction (single cone) kit. Let me know (via e-mail). Hope this helped. Cheers, Danny
April 17, 200224 yr Sigh!!!!!!! My broker contacted Zenith whose response to me adding a performance filter, including K&N replacement elements if I felt like wasting my money , would be to tell me to fuck off and refund my premium less six months payments which is not a good deal 6 months into the policy. What a bunch of tossers. So it looks like a 10 month wait before Nissa gets to breath properly.
April 17, 200224 yr I meant two months into the policy. Brain scramabled due to much f!"£$%g annoyance.
