Well today thought id get under the car and have a look at getting the exhaust off, was nicely surprised to find that its got a full japspeed system on including divorced waist gate downpipes. so no elbows.

Well was looking over the car as i had done before, checking out the welding that i know about, when i came across this.

attachment.php?attachmentid=60666&stc=1&d=1310570233

at first glance it looks ok, but then i realised that it has smear marks in it where someone has fillered, give it a slight press and could hear the filler cracking slightly.

Give you an idea of where this is on the car, thats the front wheel on the right of the image, and you can see the vents of my wing.

Not sure i want to even bother trying to get that fixed to be honest as its going to be a lot of work and i cant weld to save my life. not sure how the hell the car past the last MOT now.

Totally disheartened now and not sure what to do, the gear box is shagged, the engine is shagged, and now the body work is shagged.

so really the car is shagged, looks good on top but falling apart.

complete waist of cash getting the new engine and gear box to be honest.

im now actually dreading what im going to find under the side skirts.

:crying: think i might just give up with 300zx's, i now know why on the last advisory it said "body work excessively corroded **dangerous**" would of thought that who ever got the MOT, would of at least got the problem sorted out properly.

oh no mate :(

thats terrible, does it need much other welding? maybe that isnt as bad as you think, maybe for you, but not for a decent welderer?

its a shame as its such a pretty Z :(

Oh hon, mate, Ian, I am so sorry. Can only imagine who you are feeling right now. Least mine's only a crappy Saab, i'm not emotionally attached to it.

Could you break it for the good parts on it, get some money back that way?

Hugs

x

Ian buddy,

Why don,t you break this one and make it your last one, the money you get from all the goodies on it, go with someone who will give you an honest opion about buying a good one,,,,,,, IT MAKES SENCE BUD

yeah but with no engine or gear box to sell, im going to be losing a large amount of cash on it. that could potentially go towards a new car.

Think i might just give up on the zeds to be honest, great looking cars, but once they start rotting, there really isn't much you can do but postpone the inevitable.

There is more welding than just that, that needs doing. im surprised the shell is still attached to the floor pan.

Drivers side needs the side skirt removed, and the whole sill needs taking back to good metal, new bits made up and re-welded to make it solid. passenger side now has that massive fillered hole, no doubt by the time its taken back to good metal, there is going to be a very large chunk of car missing that will need to be made up.

If i could weld, doubt i would be looking at it so bad, but as most of my cash is tied up till end of September with just little bits here and there to play with, i cant get the welding done in time for the MOT next month.

Only thing i can do, is slap some tax on it as it runs out this month, and then leave it off the road till end of September when i can get it looked at properly.

Once the welding is done, going to be looking at a respray again, and as im still not 100% sure on what colour the car is (there is absolutely nothing on the respray paper work to say what the colour is??) its going to have to be a full body respray.

And i still need to sort out these turbo housing before fitting my new engine and gearbox.

Sorry to hear about this mate :(

The welding souldn't be that much of an issue but with everything else i know where you're coming from.

don't think im going to break this one, don't really want to rip it part. if anyone wants it, make me a offer via PM. ill throw all my 300zx parts and bits in with it, including a engine that works, and a gear box, plus 99spec rear spoiler that needs a respray. perfect condition passenger seat. just want things gone now i think.

Jesus Vods, I really feel for you bud, that looks nasty, but as Hellraiser said, is it that bad??? I know its disheartening to see rot and rust but it could be an easy repair?? The car looks soo nice on top, not fair mate

Not the best photo, but this is the rear sill Top of photo is my side skirt thats going to need removing to get the rust sorted out.

As i said daz, i just cant do anything with the rust now, not with the passenger side like that until after september.

just wish i could weld to be honest. but as i cant, got a feeling when everything is striped back, its going to be one hell of a big job.

Looks bad mate, I don't blame you for cutting your losses and walking away from a Zed for now. Especially with everything else you have on your plate, I suspect you really don't need the chew at the moment.

I am so sick of cars right now. Thought I was doing the right thing buying the Saab, so wanted it to be a good car for us

Pfft!

all very std rust especially for a uk car. the front part you just found is a very simple skin. if its rusted through then for mot it will just need a patch and should be real cheap.

i've removed this panel on my swb while im sorting out some other rust, its easy to do if you just drill out the spotwelds. cut one out of a breaker and it should be as good as new.

rear sill look the same as most

sorry to here the bad news looks great on top,i think most will have rust problems sooner or later which unless you got a bottomless pit of money will end up scrapped which is a big shame, these cars are very expensive on the best of times with corrosion added to the equation it can be to much even for the biggest enthusiast

mate im not a welder so have no idea how to go about any of it. don't really want the car sitting there, was hoping to get the new engine and gear box in, plate the hole on the drivers side for the MOT, cut a bit out of the side skirt and get the rear plated for now just to get it past an MOT, and get all the welding properly looked at next year when the car goes to the body shop to get a abflug type 4 fitted to the front and sprayed up.

To me that patch of filler, makes the car seem very dangerous, i have to put my kids in it as well when its on the road, and i want it to be safe for them.

Everything ive found on this car that needs sorting out has been slowly eating at me as i cant get a lot of it done until after september, then seeing that i think just topped off the icing on the cake so to speak.

that bit of plate is not really structural, it should not have fiber glass filling it but it wont cause the car to fall in half

think ill calm down a bit and think through what im going to do with the car.

I wont break it, id much rather sell as a whole and let someone else break it.

If you say that part isn't that bad, i could always get my mate to plate it for now and get it all done properly next year. and just concentrate on getting the engine and gear box in.

Mechanical side of it. im not fussed about, as it gives me something to do when i get the chance. i just hate seeing big holes in my cars.

Didnt realise the car was a uk one Vods, mines a uk one and has the similiar rust spots, getting the clutch done as we speak then going to get a price from the body shop on the welding, Iam the same as you wish I could weld.

Hope it works out for you mate.

Mark

Has anyone had a proper look at the sills - under the filler is a piece of p!ss to plate to the point where I'd offer to do that for you! Sills become a bit more tricky as it's triple skinned. Don't give up on her yet especially if you have the engine and gearbox already to make it good!

Get it looked at, by a mobile welder, usually always one in the local rag, before you give yourself a coronary lol, nothing is impossible and with the amount of work you need to do on her mechanically, its just another bump in the road.

Yes its depressing, but dont let it get you down, take a chill pill and look at it with fresh eyes/brain tomorrow. In the meantime get on the phone to get some quotes just to see exactly how bad it is or isnt.

same on mine mate on the sills ,failed on my mot. lucky for me my mate runs a small garage and put me under the car to prep it for him to weld , i was gutted to see my car dying underneath , a uk model also , im no mechanic but after a day of grinding all the dead stuff off and bending some new metal into the sill shape s , he welded it in an couple of hours , i thought it was the end and as i never had a clue , but chin up mate its no that bad ,

just need to find yourself a welder and work for free for a week lol

think im going to do this the way i said about to start with, get the engine and gear box in, and then concentrate on the welding once the car is running. might stick it through the MOT with that filler in place and get it done after September when i can afford it.
