AIV question

Hi,

I have read several posts on AIV's, that say you can drill a hole in the base of the unit, plug the hose, and my mechanic says rip the whole thing out. Which is the best option and why, does anybody really know?

Regards,

What are you trying to achieve ? Are they causing a problem ?

Hi Andy,

They are gurgling, and also I am getting a small cloud of black smoke when I thrash the car. I thought that since they have something to do with fuel control it could have somethhhing to do wiht it?

Cheers Mate,

Mine are also seriously getting on my tits with the gurgling sound. I plan to take out and replace the reed valves but since I will have to take several days doing it, how do you simply disable them so that I can still drive her. Can you just plug the hose?

Mark

...I got sick of the gurgling, cleaned the all out etc but it still came back. I've sinced removed them and so far I've not encountered any probs. I could not get the pipes from the exhausts to come off so I left them in place so it still looks like I've got aiv's. Once they are removed you'll finish up with two drawers full of junk and 2 small pipes that need sealing. Easy to do as they are at the top of the engine. The only other thing is to tape up the one electrical connector in the engine bay and tuck it out of sight.

I don't know if the result will have any effect on emmissions but I'll find out at the next MOT. If there is a problem, then one if the pipes that need blocking is the one that improves emmission readouts if it's left un-blocked at the time of the MOT - if you get my drift.

good luck

...car will go faster because it's lighter - remove the spare wheel and jack too and carry a tyre repair canister - faster still.

Thanks Guys,

So I can rip the units out, does that mean I should plug the pipes or leave them unblocked, and whatever I do will not affect the performance of the car?

Slightly confused because I exceedingly dim!

Mark

What is the purpose of the AIV units, is it just to put more air into the exhaust? and for what benefit?

guys

...the aiv valves pump air into the exhaust to improve emmissions at idle. And yes, I forgot to mention to plug the pipes that lead into the exhaust after removal.

..I should say, I'm no mechanic, so please forgive me if I offer any duff advice.

cheerz

Anyone known how much the reed valves cost from Nissan UK
