Boost - power

OK a question for the techy gurus out there. I want to know what I do next to get some more power. Here is what I have done so far. Sport 500 Turbos, 555 injectors and a JWT ECU mapped to match the new turbos and injectors. When the supplied boost jets were fitted the engine ran very badly so were removed and the engine is seemingly now running at 14.5psi. It has been suggested that the best thing to do is to have a boost controller fitted to do the work of the boost jets that JWT supplied. Is this correct or what course of action would be better?

I'd go for intercoolers first to be honest John. This will pave the way to horsepower heaven wink.gif No big gains just from ICs but a pretty essential mod once running boost in these regions... Warren aka 300z is sorting a group buy on some very shortly. Instead of running boost jets I would recommend a proper electronic boost controller - there are a few out there by HKS, Blitz, Apexi etc etc etc... These control the boost properly and eliminate boost spikes (if set up correctly) as well as giving an adjustable boost level from inside the car....

Is an electronic boost controller an easy fit or does it require some specialist or technical knowledge? Who has got whay sort and which is best? I looked at the Apex web site and they look cool but are they any good. I want something that allows me to run as now most of the time but when I want to stomp on someone I want to have a blast of power.

Don't forget, I take mine to someone when it gets harder than a fluids/levels check. Fingers dirty is ok, but bruised knuckles or needing techy skills is a no no. How much are we talking about here?

So why is it seemingly running at 14.5psi and not stock? Don't you need some sort of controller to keep it there.

Don't ask me I just pay the bills and drive it. I assume that the wastegate controls the pressure? Techy persons?

Yeah your Sport 500 turbos will have its wastegates set at approx 14 psi. Standard Zed turbos are set at 9psi I believe.

I would go for the Blitz Controller myself, you should be able to run 18psi and above quite easily with your Turbos.

Hey JV, what spoiler u got on the back there? I like.

Boost jets were originally with the new turbos, does the boost controller do the same function as them?

Are their any sorts of controller to avoid? I have looked on the Apex, HKS, Blitz and SVS web sites and their seems to be a lot of controllers around.

The one that is on the SVS site as the Profec B offers an optional overtake boost function off an additional steering wheel switch. I was thinking that as my car is an auto, when you are in normal gearbox mode and you stomp on the throttle the gearbox shifts into the "power" setting for a while. This causes the "Power On" warning light to come on the dash, would it be possible therefore to take a feed from that warning lamp circuit to the overtake function of the controller?

The rear spoiler is a universal rallye £165 from Online Autosports in Lichfield, their contact details are on my website.

Yep the controller will do the same function, Of course make sure no boost jets are installed when you do fit the controller.

I would go for the Blitz controller, as I have heard the Apexi one does sometimes fail causing the turbos to overboost damaging the engine at the same time.

What about the HKS or Greddy ones?

HKS are good, but don't know anyone with them fitted to give an opinion. HKS probably be more expensive.

John, I have an HKS EVC IV. Installed about 2 years ago and had no problems with it. You can get further info on install and setup from HKS at www.hkseurope.com under "Install Instructions"

Anyone got an APEXI AVC-R or a Greddy Profec B fitted?

Is the HKS EVC IV or the HKS EVC EZ better? God, this is soooo confusing.

Mike Feeney can get these for me but I want one that someone has actually had fitted to a 300zxTT perferably a J-spec import like mine.

I have the hks evc iv it works good. But i find it does a bit too much. All you really want is to set it as high as you can and leave it. What is the point in turning it down and making the car slower, you can just take your foot off a bit to do that.

Keep it simple thats what i say.

When you use a boost controller you are removing the safety boost function.

My Blitz Dual-SBC has 4 presets so I find it usefull to have 1 set to safety boost, 2 set to stock boost, 3 set at 12psi and 4 set at 16psi. Just turn the switch to whatever you feel like.

I don't like the idea of driving in rain and ice with 400+ bhp to catch me out - easier to turn it down.

Also has an overboost function which basicaly gives you 10 seconds or whatever of higher than normal boost for when you just have to beat that skyline.

OK thanks guys. I have decided to go for the HKS IV as it seems the simplest one. I am intending to set the low at 14psi and the high at 18psi, as I have upgraded turbos, ECU and injectors. Anyone think that I could go higher than 18psi or is that about right?

just to let anyone know that is interested that SVS are offering 15% off their current stock of Greddy Profec B boost controllers eg. £285 + VAT + Carriage.

With 555's I think you can go up to about 21psi with standard internals but not sure how the transmission etc will cope.

Should be around 500bhp??

Then again i'm no expert, just going on what I read here.

Wow 21psi, not sure the rest of the car, including the paint woudl stand that sort of power, LOL Would be a laugh at santa pod though. I think that will just go to 18 for the moment.
