power/hold/OD and auto box

Last post for today - honest!

My TT is an import and I got no manual with it. Can someone tell me exactly what the various gearbox settings do??

It seems to me that the overdrive being off puts it in a lower gear higher up the revs. Logically the power setting would give greater power at the expense of fuel (?) but the hold setting is a complete mystery to me....? Please enlighten me!! What are the best settings for beating 5.5L Mercs away from the lights (sore point!) and economy (LOL!)

Cheers, RobH

Some info :-

The 4 speed automatic transmission is a lockup type. When in drive mode, gears change 1-2-3 then 3 lockup, giving the effect of 4 gears. When overdrive (4th) is switched in, the change goes 1-2-3-4 then 4 lockup, giving the effect of 5 forward gears. There is a communications link between the automatic transmission control computer and the engine management computer, and this amongst other things, allows the engine computer to retard ignition, thus momentarily reducing engine power, during auto gear changes. Auto gear changes therefore are very smooth. The automatic transmission fitted to the turbo model is stronger than the one installed in the non turbo. Although the gear ratios are almost identical, there are many minor differences between the two transmissions.

The Japanese automatic transmission has many more features than the export models. A "power", "normal" and "hold" switch is fitted to modify transmission shift points. The effect of the "power" setting is to delay upshifting, but does not alter the maximum RPM that change occurs. In order to change at the red line or rev limiter speed, one must operate the shifter manually. The hold setting allows holding prevents downshift into second when the shifter is set to "D", and prevents downshift into first when the shifter is in "2". Another curious feature with the Japanese version is that lock up is also available in second gear.

Here is my understanding. The auto is a 4 speed box including the overdrive. Overdrive on is slower but more economical. Hold retains the gears longer and is useful in snow and ice.

Power allows the box to rev higher, eg to the redline 7000 before changing up.

If in Normal and thump it the autobox controller automatically changes the setting to Power until you hold off on acceleration.

For best economy use Normal and Overdrive On.

For best playtime I use Power and take off the overdrive until I get to 120mph then switch the overdrive back on to keep the car going upto ..... well a little more than the legal speed limit.

For best drag runs I use Power and no overdrive, held the car on thebrake and pushed the revs upto 1800/2000rpm. That gave me my best start with a little wheel spin but anough traction to move foward.

Hope this helps, probably some more experienced auto drivers can fine tune it.
