Handy Handbrake Tip

I've been having a problem with my handbrake lately with it allowing the car to roll even when it is pulled up full and then once the car has rolled a few inches, the handbrake can go up a few more notches.

I checked the Manual out which illustrates the use of a spanner when trying to adjust the cable where the handbrake is.

However, upon undoing the press stud on the handbrake boot, I had a good rummidge and could feel something long with a nut on the end of it. So I got a thin, long reach 10mm socket and tried to turn but it would only undo.

Hhhmmm!!!

Decided to strip the centre console which required the removal of about a million screws including the bit round the gear knob and the facia over the stereo - Bollox!

Got it all out and while I was there decided to do a bit of hoovering only to find that the screw I had been trying to turn was the right one. It seems that there is only so much thread on the end of the adjuster. Therefore it looks like the handbrake cables are shagged.

So there you have it. Use a long reach 10mm socket(5 minutes) and dont do as I did(35 minutes).

Rob and Wendy, I particularly noticed that your handbrake was at a strange angle.

When you mention it can go up a few more notches after rolling a bit that suggests that there is play in the handbrake shoes.

You did check the brake shoes first? You can adjust them with a screwdriver thru the hole in the drum part of the rear brake disc. You have to prise out a rubber plug. See the manual. I did it with mine and it made a huge difference. You should not need to touch the handbrake cable.

The handbrake shoes should last and last unless you do handbrake turns! They only come on otherwise when parked. The rear calipers do the real braking.

Willie

The handbrake shoes have been checked as I have had new disc and pads and a good clean but the handbrake shoes have got loads'a'life and have been adjusted.

Marina ok - Bump ok - Z ok apart from dodgy handbrake.

Dont think Steve posted as he would have told me.

Adjusting your handbrake will only take 5 minutes. Use a long reach 10mm with a 10" extension. Slip it in the leather and turn it clockwise. If it stops - you have come to the end of the thread. Let me know if this happens as I have recieved a quote from Courtesy for $55.00 per cable. That includes shipping.

Cheaper than Nissan over here.

I have done that already. It looks like I need to ajust the shoes like what Willieo said. I don't think cables are at fault.

Just remember guyZ that after 10 years the handbrake cable will have STRETCHED considerably wink.gif This could well mean that there is not enough adjustment.... What about at the other end of the cable is it not adjustable there under the car???

CheerZ,

Andy

Have checked the manual and the only adjustment is at the lever and at the drums. I have done both - looks like 10yrs has killed my cables.

Courtesy have quoted me $55 per cable.
