E10 fuel

hi all

i was reading a very interesting article in classic car mag at work it is the jun 2011 edition.the topic was about E10 fuel wich is at your local pumps already but is about to change and instead of having 5% ethanol in it it will be being increased to 10%.

the main problem with the addition of ethanol is the water absorbtion wich causes higher combustion gas temperatures leaves water residue in the bores causing washing of the bores and premature wear as well as having the affecct of weakoning the mixture.that is just with 5% what the effects will be with10% no one knows yet.we are having lots of problems at work at present with fuel growing bacteria in the tanks and abviously blocking injectors pumps and filters,as a company we are trialing a fuel set additive wich seams to be having a great affect better fuel economy etc.

does anyone in the no have any thoughts or findings as to how this fuel is affecting our 300zx,s either in turbo or n/a and whether there is an additive wich is of benefit to us as there is nothing we will be able to do about the addition of ethanol to our fuel

sorry about punctuation english never was my strong point but hopefully i have been able to get my point accross and have hopefully been able to open a few eyes

The U.S fuel content has higher ethanol than ours, and they do indeed suffer with failing injectors becuase of it. It affects the early style 89-94 Injectors.

wonder just how many engines have suffered from major failure due to the addition and how many people have put it down to one of those things that happens when it could just be down to the fuel companies messing with the fuel and if there is some sort of additive to safegaurd against it

Is this the sort of thing that could be combat by STP Fuel Injector cleaner every few tanks? Or redex additive? For example?

This topic has been discussed for over 3 years in Europe, in fact many caravan clubs have it posted on their web sites warning their members as far back as 2007, in 2011 though it seems the worry has not come to anything and IF the bio fuel craze carries on there is many things to do.

E10 is hygroscopic - which means that it attracts moisture from the atmosphere. If E10 is left for a while in a tank then moisture build-up may occur leading to phase separation, the first worry is internal petrol tank corrossion...nothing new there then, the classic car scene has been dealing with that for 50 +years!

Is it possible for water to be drawn into the engine and possible engine damage? got to get through the filter and along the fuel rail all of which are heated by the engine! next time your Z is connected to a ConZult check out the fuel temp read out!

So How DO I Fix This?

Don't allow your vehicle to stand for long inactive periods of time whereby phase separation may occur, if you cannot avoid this just leave the smallest amount of fuel in you can, anyway pure E10 in your fuel tank should be changed every 2-3 weeks, mixed with other non bio fuels weakens the effects to that of normal fuel.

1)Remove metal fuel tank and fit a plastic one

2)Remove the metal fuel tank have it cleaned and sealed with one of the many internal tank coatings that are 100% resistant to ethanol

3)Fit a water separator.

4) Mix with non bio fuel

4) Fill up with super unleaded

Good heads up from Paul on future fuel issues that may arise, dont worry too much, remember the outcry when lead was removed from petrol, all those thousands of cars remdererd useless as they could not run on unleaded fuel......unitil someone suggested changing the parts that are not compatible...the valves and problem sorted, all about adaption really.
