A Tapping noise is coming from the top back of the engine. I havent driven the car for about 2 months. You can seem to hear it at the end of the first and second gear and just before you change gear, after that it seems to go away.

What do you guys reckon?? Lifters i hope!

so you can hear the noise from inside the car... so it only sounds like it's coming from the top back.

can you hear it when stopped, bonnet open?

when was last oil change, what oil did you use?

what is the oil level now?

any issues with the turbos? smoke, noise, etc...

No other issues at all really, just the noise. Oil was done about 6 months ago. Yeah sounds like its coming from the top back of the engine, its mainly when i start the car up from cold. Yes you can hear it slightly from the inside too

OK,

it could be the tappets/lifters but that would mean that there isn't enough oil getting to them (particularly if it stops after a bit) so it could be the oil pump but again could also be a blockage or need a good clean and oil change.

it could also be the turbo/s as they sometimes can make noises that sound like tapping.

or could be bearings at the end of the cams or the big end....

I'd say cheapest option first, get someone to have a listen with a stethoscope to confirm where it's coming from.

e.g. http://uk.ebid.net/for-sale/new-wolf-mechanics-stethoscope-garage-car-workshop-29870732.htm?from=googlebase

in either case a full oil change and clean may help.

i hope there will be some other opinions on this as well......... :)

Any tappety noise deserves a good oil change (Unless you JUST did one and it's STILL making the noise)! Remember to put some engine flush through it, I personally prefer Wynns, swear by it. Mine was making a very tappety noise on load a while back, and it turned out to be my coil pack connectors coming loose, you couldn't hear it on tickover, but as soon as you put a bit of load on the engine, tappety as hell, was obviously getting some pre-detonation with the coil packs coming loose, or potentially not even firing on all 6 cylinders if there was just no power to the coil pack at all.
