Hey Guys,

I am interested in a private number plate that this guy has on his car. I am interested in buying the number plate and we have come to an agreement. However i have no idea how these things work, what is the process by which the number plate will be transfered? Would it be transfered to my name or my car?

Could someone with more knowledge please advice me on this?? Also is there anything i need to check before i purchase from the guy?? Security stuff?

You will need to pass all the info onto the dvla, it will cost approx £80 for the transfer fee, it will take a few weeks though to get all the documents in your name, just make sure the number plate isnt too new for you car :thumbup1: if its all done via the dvla then you should have no security worries

I`m not sure about that? I think even though you have bought the reg, the dvla still own it, but cant be sure, the reg will be in your name and you can transfer it to any car as long as it doesnt make a car look newer than it is, its an easy process, just 1 form to fill in

A friend of mine bought a plate directly off their web-site and he had the plates on his car within 10 days of purchase.

The DVLA fee is £80. As Daz said, complete a form, send to the DVLA and they will then send you a confirmation form + new tax disc + new MOT certificate. Take the form to Halfords for them to make the plates. Stick 'em on and don't forget to tell the insurance company that your number has changed.

The new V5 will arrive within another 1-2 weeks.

I was surprised how simple it was.

yh seems like it, however it seems to say that you gotta send your v5c and mot certificate in too?

Yes, that's right. If you think about it, the keeper of the old vehicle and the keeper of the new one need to change the registration number of each of the cars. The old one needs to replace the one you've just bought off it and the new one (yours) needs to get the new one. That means both V5Cs and both MOTs need changing to get the new numbers they both need. It's obvious if you follow it through (or have done it before).

The donor car needs to be currently MOTd and taxed. So does the receiving vehicle..

If the receiving vehicle isnt then there is another way. The donor vehicles owner can put the reg on a retention certificate. This can be transferred(assigned ) to you . You can then put it on your car when its taxed n tested..

If the donor car is not taxed and tested then the plate cant be transferred and is therefore worth nowt.

you cant make your car look newer btw...i.e if your car is lets say 90/91 H reg you can't put a plate that begins with J, K, L ,T, S........etc.....(makes it look younger)
