big_jim Posted May 12, 2011 Posted May 12, 2011 Long story. Tring to find out if the BMW;s the LSD the owner told me it had. Spin the wheel and the other turns the same way on the TT subframe ive got sitting there. Turns the other way on the BMW. Is it an LSD? Quote
big_jim Posted May 12, 2011 Author Posted May 12, 2011 Eh? My TT doesn't.. Niko's zed it came from.. Quote
vodkashots Posted May 12, 2011 Posted May 12, 2011 Eh? My TT doesn't.. Niko's zed it came from.. some people get it welded, dunno why though, something about drifting or doing something equally as daft lol Quote
vodkashots Posted May 12, 2011 Posted May 12, 2011 Are they not LSD's standard? was pretty sure they where, but your now making me question things lol Quote
Yowser Posted May 12, 2011 Posted May 12, 2011 All Zeds (TT and NA) have Viscous LSD's Jacking up and spinning a wheel is not a reliable test. No torque load. A Viscous LSD can act like an open diff in such a situation for example. Quote
big_jim Posted May 12, 2011 Author Posted May 12, 2011 Cheers mate. Should they spin the same way tho? Im none the wiser! Quote
Yowser Posted May 12, 2011 Posted May 12, 2011 Same way = lsd. Opposite way = open But dont rely on it. Quote
jimmer Posted May 12, 2011 Posted May 12, 2011 Same way = lsd. Opposite way = open But dont rely on it. Yer spot on there mate, and generally it should turn the same way when jacked up. Quote
big_jim Posted May 12, 2011 Author Posted May 12, 2011 The complete subframe off the car spins the same way. The BMW with the back in the air, spin the other way. Quote
Tudor... Posted May 12, 2011 Posted May 12, 2011 there is another (probably just as unreliable and pointless test) do a hefty wheel spin and see if you leave a 'number 11'.... Just fitted my subframe back on today after a full on refurb, and mine do spin the same way... (TT) Quote
Clarkey Posted May 13, 2011 Posted May 13, 2011 What BMW is it anyway? As a rule, they have open diffs, unless its an M model, or a really old one. Quote
leo-r32gts Posted May 13, 2011 Posted May 13, 2011 A lot of Be Ems don't have LSD's.. Mainly the M line cars and more powerful 5 series etc. Find a snowy hill and try driving up it, you'll soon find out! :tt2: Quote
Big Rod Posted May 13, 2011 Posted May 13, 2011 (edited) Jack the back end up, (safely!), and turn the propshaft by hand. If both the wheels turn the same direction, (i.e. forwards or backwards), at the same rate then it's an LSD. The old test was to turn one of the wheels when the rear of the car was elevated, (ie Posidrives of Yank GM cars), and they should both turn the same way but many more modern ones, ('90 onwards), don't do that for some reason, they'll turn the opposite way. Don't know why, I guess they're a different type of LSD, but the above test should confirm. Or you could try leaving a set of 11s on some gravel or slippery surface, that sounds much more like fun!! ETA :- Sniff the oil. Hypoid gear oil stinks to high heaven and doesn't wash out for a week! Spoken from personal experience! Edited May 13, 2011 by Big Rod Quote
