yes so its got 4 main Gears ( so called ) as its Auto .. plus the over drive ..

Cool so in real life terms its a 5 speed auto box yes ?

not really as it just says 4 speed .. nothing to do with the over drive ..

Oh well, I tried. :blushing:

It's a 4 speed auto with overdrive. To the best of my knowledge that doesn't make it a five speed auto, it elongates ratios and changes final drive or something like that. Just like Dolomite sprints used to. Guessing really.

Ok to put you out of your misery, the auto box has 3 direct gears then over drive after this and with the correct load conditions torque lock up engages reducing torque convertor fluid slip, so hence 5 noticable changes.

That's what I meant. :tt2:

How long you been thinking of a come back?

According to official timing statistics, 4 minutes. Or enough time to go to the fridge, crack another frosty, click on new posts, and let my laptop play catch up.

:detective:

I had the same doubts, but here is what jeff said then, slightly longer explanation

Ok the auto box is a three speed with overdrive, so effectively 4 speed however it also has torque lock up which is an extra reduction in the torque fluid slip this can be felt as a 5th change.

The ratio`s are not the same between auto and manual 3rd and 3rd in fact when rolling roading an auto it is done in drive with overdrive switched off to maintain a one to one ratio in a manual this is 4th gear, this illustrates the higher gearing on the auto`s part of which is why the turbo`s are designed to spool up differently.

From experience of driving all manner of zeds on a daily basis my view is at motorway speeds the engine is at lower revs in an auto for the same road speed in a manual, this averages out at around the same mpg though in the real world.

My auto box is knackered, and only uses 1st and 2nd, im told, but feels fine and i can drive it round town no problem.. Ok 1 problem, smokey turbos!
