Just got back from the MOT test of my 300zx tt. FAILED!!!!

Devastated to say the least,:crying: After 4 years of work with regards to new sills/floor etc' etc'

I now find myself with problems that I am unsure of how to fix. I really would appreciate some help and advice please.

(1) During break testing, the tester said he thought he had just blown a line at the rear, sure enough, after looking underneath there was fluid pi**ing down onto the right hand side exhaust system, heartbreaking or what.

(2) Both rear top tie-bar bushes were shot, causing excessive movement from left to right. When I asked him if this was a big job he would not commit himself. (What do you guy's think? Could I do it myself?)

(3) Next came the Emissions, Failed on all 3 idle tests!!

I have include the results for the first fast idle,

could someone suggest the possible remedy please?

CO, Target 0.300 Max. Actual reading, 4.251

HC, Target 200 Max. Actual reading, 265.

Lambda, Target 0.970 to 1.030. Actual 0.888.

One thing I did notice, On the emissions printout, it listed the vehicle as,

Nissan 350Z, Does this mean the test could be to stringent for the 300zx?

These figures do not mean a lot to me so would someone be kind enough to suggest the probable cause please?

At the moment I feel as though it is the end of the world, hopefully it's not.

Thanks in advance, Dave.

Cheers for the offer Mantav8,:thumbup1: Very kind indeed.

I asked around at work once I new the brake pipe size, (thanks again:bow:) and I have been lent a brand new one.

On your advice, I have bought all the bits I think I will need and can't wait to make a start in the morning.:taz:

Thanks again mate.

Managed to make some headway with the dreaded rotten brake lines over the last few days,:taz:

I still have the left hand side pipes to do (2 off) and then I will be in a position to test for leaks.

Not sure how to achieve that mind, being as I have no callipers or axle attached at the moment.:confused1:

Thought I might connect the callipers up and somehow wedge something in in place of the disks.:hammer: Any ideas????

Does anyone know if I will have any problems with regards the MOT with reference to me splicing into the existing brake lines?

You've done a fine job with that Dave, nice one :thumbup1:

As for checking for leaks - You are probably just as well building everything back up and test as the final part. If all the unions are nice and tight there shouldn't be any reason for them leaking. As for joining to existing brake lines I'm not sure from an MOT point of view, the best procedure is to replace the whole line but I've seen them repaired with a joining piece before.

Looking good mate!-in ref to testing,a piece of wood in both calipers works!

There is no probs with joining into an existing pipe for the MOT.

Thanks Guy's,:thumbup1:

Finally finished of the brake pipes, early indications are showing no leaks, so hopefully that is 1 down 2 to go as regards the MOT fails.

Next step is to tackle the knackered bushes, This is where I get confused, I have put a tommy bar through the bushes and can not find any real problem with regards to movement. they look fine to me. Could someone tell me the best place to get replacement bushes for the ones circled in the photo please?

really well done, Redwine. you should be proud.

Splicing is fine.

as for emissions.. the car model is unimportant. Emissions are against which legislation was being inforced at the year of manufacture. A 350Z is Euro IV. which is half the limits of Euro III which is an amazingly different test to Euro II. Yes the man went wrong there. a new set of sparks, a clean earthing point and original air filter will help the Thc down, perhaps significantly which in turn effects all other levels.

best of luck. I'm impressed.

Thanks Guy's,:thumbup1:

Thanks guy's, appreciate your comments.

I will give Mike a ring in the morning Mantav8, hopefully he can get them to me for weekend?

On a separate note, managed to tease one of the offending bushes out tonight. Looks fine to me.:confused1:

What does everyone else think? Could it have just needed the pinch bolt tightening?:taz:

4 off new rear hub bushes arrived today, so I set about removing the 4 knackered ones to be replaced. (2 per top side in each rear hub)

Came out OK but did leave some minor pick up in the bore though.:excl: should I try and smooth the bores before refitting the new or just leave as is?

Just unwrapped the new bushes and have noticed 1 end is painted blue, does this signify anything with regards to fitting?

also, should I warm the hub prior to pressing home the bushes? worried about getting them out of square.

sorry about all the questions, just that I have not done anything like this before.:sweatdrop:

Well, having checked everything with regards to refitting the sub frame and bleeding the brakes etc',

I decided to tackle the question of emissions with the garage that failed her.

No joy I'm afraid, he said it did not make any difference as to which vehicle he selected. if the car was registered between 1992 and 1994 then it had to have a co reading of 0.2% or below.

not really knowing what to do now, I literally do not know where I go from here.

What could be the likely cause of my high co levels?

All suggestions welcome as I feel I have come to the end of the road.

Load of *****cks!!-car isn't in the database.Take it somewhere they don't employ Jobworths!!:hammer:

In fact if you get stuck mate, run her up to Notts and I'll put her through a test where I go-Sound guys!

and elsewhere on the web but I wanted something in black n white, specific to my car, that I can hand to the tester to avoid any 'misunderstandings'.

Gave them my cars reg/VIN and bingo.....expected a vague reply but have been pleasantly surprised......

"Thank you for your email enquiry dated 5th April 2010, concerning

emissions.

There is no exemption from any part of the MOT test purely due to it being

an import. The vehicle will still need to meet the criteria set out in

'The MOT Inspection Manual for Car and Light Commercial Vehicles'.

However, some imported vehicles aren't listed in the 'In Service Exhaust

Emission Standards for Road Vehicles' book as we aren't supplied limits

from the manufacturers.

When the tester carries out the emissions part of the MOT test they should

follow the flow chart in section 7.3 of 'The MOT Inspection Manual for Car

and Light Commercial Vehicles'. As your vehicle was first used between 1st

August 1992 and 31st July 1995 and there isn't an exact match for the

vehicle then it would be required to go through a non CAT test and meet the

following limits:

CO

HC

I can confirm that the Mazda Eunos Roadster isn't listed in the emissions

book.

I hope this information has assisted you with your enquiry, but if you have

any further questions please do not hesitate to contact us again.

Kind Regards,

Rebecca

Got this from another Forum, like the Eunos the ZX isn't in the book hence a reading of 3.5% Co and Hc=1200ppm.

Print this off and shove it up his nose! LOL!

Load of *****cks!!-car isn't in the database.Take it somewhere they don't employ Jobworths!!:hammer:

Exactly!

See here for details: http://300zx.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=27060

They have to find an exact match in the database or the vehicle is only subject to a non cat test

The Z32 is not in there! That is why they have selected the 350z! incorrectly!

Those joiners on the pipes bud,are they flared, they look like nut and olives. If they are olive type joiners they should fail.Paul will be able to confirm this.

Guy's, I can not thank you enough!:bow::bow::bow::bow:

the information you have all put forward fills me with hope. I shall follow up all info and talk to the tester in the next day or so. I just need to have all the answers ready before I take him on.:hammer:

I will let you know how I get on.

Good point Jimmer, they are flared joints, had me worried for minute there.:sweatdrop:

Right, just need to get the Co down then!-is the car you have been re-building for xxxx years?-if so have you serviced it,fresh fuel etc?

Hi Mantav8, As you say, I have been slowly getting her ready over the last 4 years.:hammer::hammer:

As for a service,:blushing: to my shame I have not got round to it yet. I was planning a thorough service after the MOT had gone through.

As for fuel, nice and fresh I am happy to say.

So as for a service, what sort of items should I look at first with regards to affecting the emissions?

Deffo Plugs, oil (effects Hc) air filter, basically do a full job mate. After 4 years, she'll need it!

If it fails the RIGHT test, you need to look at getting a Consult on it mate and check the settings etc.Reckon with a service and a good thrash it will be fine tho' LOL!

I've just done all that, but I cleaned/wired every part of the subframe etc. and painted it, my god it took ages, could eat your tea off the underneath now tho! Nice job on the brake lines too, I spliced 3 of mine, but I staggered the joins and put them under the plastic trim that runs under the car, so they can't be seen, just in case... Good job fella...

Not sure if this link will work, but there's a bunch of pics when I did my sub-frame, could be of use for someone, or at least something to look at!
