Just got back from the MOT test of my 300zx tt. FAILED!!!!

Devastated to say the least,:crying: After 4 years of work with regards to new sills/floor etc' etc'

I now find myself with problems that I am unsure of how to fix. I really would appreciate some help and advice please.

(1) During break testing, the tester said he thought he had just blown a line at the rear, sure enough, after looking underneath there was fluid pi**ing down onto the right hand side exhaust system, heartbreaking or what.

(2) Both rear top tie-bar bushes were shot, causing excessive movement from left to right. When I asked him if this was a big job he would not commit himself. (What do you guy's think? Could I do it myself?)

(3) Next came the Emissions, Failed on all 3 idle tests!!

I have include the results for the first fast idle,

could someone suggest the possible remedy please?

CO, Target 0.300 Max. Actual reading, 4.251

HC, Target 200 Max. Actual reading, 265.

Lambda, Target 0.970 to 1.030. Actual 0.888.

One thing I did notice, On the emissions printout, it listed the vehicle as,

Nissan 350Z, Does this mean the test could be to stringent for the 300zx?

These figures do not mean a lot to me so would someone be kind enough to suggest the probable cause please?

At the moment I feel as though it is the end of the world, hopefully it's not.

Thanks in advance, Dave.

Thanks again Mantav8, and thanks also Tudor. (and everyone else by the way)

Made some real headway today, thanks to the input from you guy's.

Once I had read through everyones help and advice several times, I felt ready to put your comments to the boss at the test centre.

I have to say, he was a real gent about it and agreed in principle, subject to a pre test hook up, to re test as a B.E.T. Good news or what?

The hook up is Friday afternoon, Hopefully he might fit me in for the full test Saturday.

I do not want to get carried away but if she passes, somehow I will buy you all a pint, or three.:bow::bow:

The BET is the first step - it WILL fail this test, you then need to go on to do a vehicle specific test & as there is no Z32 in the database a non cat test needs to be carried out. This is the main point! :)

Good news and bad news!! :taz:

Run the Nissan through BET and then on to the none cat test today, passed with flying colours!:) As a gesture of good will, he said, while you are here, I will re test against the previously failed faults.:sweatdrop:

He is now saying the rear hicas ball joints are shot!!! :mad2:

Does this sound correct? I would hate to do them and then be told it is something else.

Another fault was brakes dragging at the rear just after break test, sticking callipers?

By the time I get her through I will have run out of insurance at this rate.

Not to mention patience.

Any thoughts, pleeeeeeeease.:flowers:

(it is my birthday:lol:)

make sure your hand brake is full released and you've not just overtightened it, not sure on the zed ones but some do have an auto adjustment and might just be too tight, check the pistons on the calipers are not sticking as well very possibly are after sitting for 4 years, is better to do the hicas ball joints rather than have a wandering rear end, there are a few good post about on how to replace on the car.

if this is already done then ignore my post as few days after your last post lol

good luck mate

Hi and thanks dragonback,:thumbup1: I will check the handbrake as you say,

as it happens I did adjust it when I was re fitting the back end.

If the pistons are sticking, what is the best way to free them off without doing any damage?

Also, could it not be the rolling road just registering the drag of the diff and back axle?:turned: or am I clutching at straws?

As for the work, i hope to get the parts for before the weekend and crack on.

Thanks guy's

If the handbrake is the problem (?) then just back it off at the lever or at the small openings in the discs id its just one wheel.

If the problem is with the calipers however then its much more likely that its the pads jamming in the caliper rather than the caliper itself. Strip out the pads clean the back plate edges up clean the caliper down where the pads sit and then refit and should sort it out.

Cheers Jeff tt,

Come to think of it, I did put the brakes back together in a bit of a hurry and they were a bit gummed up now you mention it.:blushing:

I will do as you say and give them a good clean and re grease.

Thanks,

dont use grease on the pads use a small amount of copperslip on the sections that move ie where pads slide in the caliper.
